Knowing God, as well as knowing any person, is more than having information about Him. It involves having a personal relationship, with fellowship, and communion. In Scripture the verb know describes the most intimate relationship between husband and wife. Gen. 4:11 ; Math 1:25
Unbelievers and the heathen are described as ones, "who do not know God." I Thes. 4:5; 2 Thes 1:8 They have information about God, some of it accurate, but they have no relationship with Him. The demons know and even believe "that there is one God" James 2:19, but having no relationship with Him they shudder.
The ministry of the indwelling Holy Spirit is essential in increasingly making God the Father known to us as believers. So is the Word of God as we read and meditate on it and apply it to our lives. As God strengthens and guides and provides in all circumstances of life, we get to know Him better too. We will never get to know God fully. Even in His presence in heaven we will continue to get to know Him better.
