Spreading myself a bit

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

You know you're middle-aged when it all starts to spread. People aren't kidding when they say it's like holding a flame near a wax candle and watching the effect. All over.

I mean honestly. Today I wore a white blouse to work, that I haven't been able to wear for about eight years, and the blouse fits ok. But . . . it's rather short and my skirt (which was too tight when I was on holiday in France) is slipping down, and so there was a bit of a gap at times.

Draughty, darlings, draughty.

So there I was clutching my middle region rather self-consciously. I mean, my gut is MUCH smaller than it was a few months ago, but it's not what you would call a thing of beauty. By definition a gut isn't, is it? It's . . . well, it's a gut. And in the case of mine, it's sort of deflated rather than reduced in size. It's all there still but there's less of me filling it out than there used to be.

I used to think that the term 'middle-aged spread' referred to weight GAIN but now I'm not sure. Now I think it's possibly the habit that whatever you've got just . . . reaches further. Side to side. Top to bottom (don't even get me started on my bottom). A few years ago one of my colleagues suggested I needed a bodyshaper which is what my mother would call a girdle. I thought that was the single nastiest comment anyone had ever made about my fat. She must have thought that one out with both hands for a fortnight.

It's a good thing she can't see my now, that's all I can say. She'd probably go out and buy me one for Christmas.

Never mind.

Anyone mentions bodyshapers to me, they get my halo wrapped round their chops.

I've been properly on track today for the first time in a week. emoticon

Thanks for the chuckles. I am not too fond of middle-aged spread, either. And mine definitely doesn't seem to be unspreading at all. Can't imagine why, since I have asked so nicely. :-(

Good job!! I do have to pick clothes according to how they fit, trends change and so does my body.

Proper fit is everything and hard to manage when you are in transition. Just wait until you are in maintenance and you can buy yourself all manner of fantastic clothes that actually fit. I predict it's not that far in your future.

Your description is outrageously funny. I also liked " Dawn64's .

Let's see if this is any comfort to you. I am a size 5-7, and I got a roll across my tummy and hips too. I'm i my 50's. So, it's not size thing.

I used to be a 12 plus, so this is my story about that.

But maybe younger people who loose weight , their skin tightens back better

.I'm guessing, because I didn't know about people that have the huge amounts of extra skin hanging off places they lost. Now, that is totally unfair and unfair. So infuriating , for some.

Anyhow, I do wear hose body shapers on some outfits. Some work better, and are more comfortable. Personally, I think they are best for formal wear or somebody wears dressy pants or dresses. I asked my friends or compared them, sorta like coffee or tea. emoticon

    how about compression garments?
Bikers use them, so it isn't a girdle. Right?

when I run my skin flaps slap --so seriously thinking of compression shirt.
The skin will never go away.
I waited too long.
Sigh.

I will never wear a girdle again! I grew up in the time when women always wore them--even those that didn't need them.

Too funny! I have had the same experiences so many of you have described...Dawn's description of her Valentine's Day experience made me laugh out loud. They look so good when they demonstrate them on TV, but obviously my body is more of a challenge than they can handle.

So proud of you for being on track - congratulations emoticon
Now, about that 'spread' - it will go too, just remember that our skin is not as elastic as it used to be - just as it takes us a bit longer to do stuff, so it also takes our bodies a bit longer to do stuff like shrink back after the deflation emoticon
Hang in there and enjoy your struggles with drooping clothes he he

Speaking of uncomfortable attire--- I mean really--- has anyone noticed the high-heeled shoes for women??? They honestly look like 12 inch stilts!!
I just bet that the podiatrists are shaking their heads in astonishment....
Fashion---or foolishness. Indeed, to each his(her) own!! LOL

Whatever works for you, works! I myself have a great body-shaper that never rolls down, and it does the trick under slightly clingy dresses...but I cannot wear it under pants or everything hangs down! Keep up the good work

Awesome blog! I too have the same problem with way too much sagging. A co-worker told me about those body shapers. I tried one for Valentines since I was wearing a dress that was a little clingy. Did not work! I spent most of the night hiking it back up where it belonged. My belly fat made it roll down to my waist. Will not wear it again.

I have no intention of wearing a bodyshaper either! I know what you mean about the spread though LOL! I'm never going to have the body of my dreams because age has taken it's toll. But I can still have the smallest, healthiest body I can even if it is spread somewhat LOL!

    Right there with ya.

Apparently the Gut problem is a guy problem too.

So I start exercising and losing weight. How do I go from 190 to 175 and my gut doesn't shrink. Not one little bit.

The skinfold caliper tells me I've got less fat at every measurement site except that spot 1 inch to the right of my belly button and the tape measure confirms that.

35" at 190...35" at 175.

It's just not right!
