Surviving Shopping on an Empty Stomach

Monday, November 26, 2012

I know...I violated shopping rule number 1. Never go to the store hungry. Yes, I paid the price by getting even more hungry and being tempted by things I wouldn't have been bothered by if I had eaten before I went to the store. But the key point is that not only did I survive, I did not put anything into my cart that would violate my great progress to date.

What I finally did was go to the produce department, grabbed a small container of prepriced unsweetened fresh fruit pieces, opened it, and slowly ate the 1 serving container as I went through the store. By the time I got to the checkout, the container was empty (and the first thing I placed on the conveyor belt to be scanned) and my hunger was sated so I wasn't tempted in the least. The only thing I picked up from the check-out was a bottle of water for the ride home.

It would have been easier had I eaten before-hand, but I am glad I found an effective, healthy solution

This happened to me last week, I needed some household items, pharmacy items and then groceries. I left the house and went to Walgreens, when Igot out a friend called and I stayed in the parking in my car on th ephone for 20 minutes, then I drove to Target which was SUPER BUSY (thank you Target for having 18 checkout lanes but 3 open on a Sunday) Then I was starving while standing in line. I still had to go to the grocery store! I actually started to feel a little shaky, so I knew I had to eat, I looked up a few fast food options on my calorie tracker, and went and grabbed a Whopper Jr. Only Lettuce- no not the best choice, BUT I stayed in my calorie range, and I made it throughmy shopping trip without buying uneccsary items.

From now on, I will eat something before I venture out!

it is nice when precut fruit is available. i have been in grocery stores that don't have them, and it annoys me. nothing i can buy as a snack for the drive home. eating before isn't always effective, since my grocery shopping is part of a large errand running day.
