Advise Please Re: Advil PM if you know ..........

Sunday, November 25, 2012

Yes ......... it's true ......... I am asking for helpful suggestions if you have tried or do use ..... Advil PM to help w/ sleep .......... I only take one medication, and am actually not wishing to take any longer, (Ambien-it has been given a bad rap, but for good reason) ............ emoticon

So, I tried Advil PM and it knocked me out for sure! (Too much) so I cut it back to .5 but then feel groggy and lethargic and make myself do stuff anyway! ......... I 'spose the logical thing to do would be cut back even less ........... I do not do anything stimulating before bed, so that is not the problem.
Oh ... And I have tried natural sleep aid remedies, like herbal stuff (which smells so horrible, i.e. Valerian root, etc) plus does nothing.
Ok ......... laid back and ready to hear ......... Please and emoticon dear fellow Sparkers!

P.S. Hours later and 6 comments: I am good now and appreciate the response! emoticon ........ so I won't ask for any more ............ :)

One doctor "prescribed" benadryl. Then several years later, I switched drs and asked about it. New Dr prescribed ambien. The bad thing about ambien is waking up, it feels like you are swimming thru goop for about 30 minutes. I find drinking a big glass (16-20 oz) of water helps.

Some of the non-pharmaceutical advice has helped me also. NO work within 60 min of bedtime. Regular exercise. Bedtime routine which (odd, I know) includes putting lotion on legs and feet...reading in bed...usually junk books or womens magazines. Nothing heavy. when I wake up in the middle of the night, stay away from the computer and go back to that light reading (I actually like reading cookbooks. Pretty pictures, you can start and end anywhere and imaginative narrative)

    Lood guck to you.

In the old days (20 years ago) I took two aspirins a couple of times and slept like a baby. I don't get any effect from benedryl.

If you look at most sleep aids the main ingredient is benedryl (basically). Living with a sleep disorder isn't easy. Most of what I have taken has been perscription.
Ambien didn't work for me either. However, the newer ones like roseren, Lunesta, etc. seeem to do better although no matter what medications I use, when they wear off I am awake. Therefore I practice, relaxation before sleep, and during those annoying moments of wakefulness. I wish I could be of some help.
I have used Melatonin and it works as well as anything. Basic self-care is the most helpful thing of all.

2B - I take Ativan an hour before bedtime, then Ambien at bedtime. I sleep like a log but only for about 6 hours. What's wrong with Ambien?

benadryl works wonders ..... used it for years! am now in menopause , but when going through it doc asked how I was sleeping .... i said I use benadryl she just looked and smiled. my son has a surgical room heart nurse friend and she said it will not hurt you go right ahead.

My prior doc recommended Unisom (you can get the generic), and I found it did not cause the next-day grogginess for me that the Benedryl did. Usually half a tablet worked for me. I now use guided relaxation (I downloaded onto my iPhone and use headphones).

Melatonin with a passion flower tea knocks out just about everyone I know but doesn't leave any grogginess. Best of luck.

If I am not mistaken the only thing besides Ibuprofen in Advil PM is Benadryl....did you try Melatonin? Sometimes that is all people need...I am an ER nurse and I worked night shift in the past...it was really hard for me to sleep so I tried Melatonin...it did help...Benadryl makes me so sleepy and hungover....I don't know you but maybe you don't need anything anymore....maybe since you have started being healthier you don't need anything to help you sleep anymore....if I were you I would try it one night! But try melatonin it is so light and easy...doesn't make you drowsy
