I Am a Runner

Sunday, November 25, 2012

Still reveling in the accomplishment of my first half marathon. Believe it or not, but the pace group I trained with usually finish a half in 2:52-3 hours. So despite the fact that Barb could have gone faster, I'm getting a lot of congratulations on the 2:37:36 time from my Galloway group members! I see I was 30th out of 90 in my age group. I was something like number 1918 out of a total of 3150 runners. Not bad for a first effort.

During the race I had no pain, but my left glute and hamstring were telling me that they were working hard. I thought they might really hurt after the race, but they didn't. Right after the race my calf muscles cramped hard several times. I drank a lot on the run, so I don't think it was dehydration causing those cramps. I figured they were just telling me I went as fast as I should have.

The day after the race, I had soreness in my quads whenever I moved. The next day I only felt it if I squatted. Three days out I was just feeling a little tired, but I also was having some trouble sleeping so that might have been the reason. Five days after the race I woke with a burning desire to run. Thought I should take it easy, but I just loved running on the beach. I even got lots of people giving me positive comments. I was wearing my St Pete Women's Half Marathon tee shirt! I ran with only a few walk breaks for over an hour. It just felt so good.

I am a runner. I am a half marathoner!!

Cramps are often a sign of the lose of salts/minerals as a result of dehydration - were you drinking water, or electrolyte? You might like to increase your electrolytes on your next big run - since that replaces the salts and minerals as well as the water.

Great result - you are a real inspiration. So strong!

Indeed you are! Your experience with the quads day after matches my own first HM outing. This time, nada for me... it was a good pace, well run interval plan. And such a joy to be there for your first!

I expect to have that knee-jerk reaction to the opening of registration for the Lincoln half, come December 1st... that's what happened last year. After all, it's kind of my "home race". If you *do* decide to come, I have a guest room waiting for you, and can provide local transport. You won't have to rent car to road trip to see your mom until the day after the race. Hee-hee! Tempted yet?

On the other hand, weather for the Lincoln half can be a little chancy... I've had friends end up running it in pouring rain, and I've run it twice, once in COLD once in HOT. So... when you know what you're doing let me know. I have decided my "anchor" event for 2013 is going to be the Wisconsin Dells Olympic distance triathlon (Rev3) in August. Everything else will just have to fit around that one.

Oh, yeah... I can tell... we are both STILL high, a week later. And my "it just felt so good" run came this morning! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
