My high school bestie had his second heart attack this past June. He was about to turn 42. Shortly after that, he called to tell me he was finally using the book on running that I sent to him after his first heart attack. He said his goal was to run a marathon, next year. (He lives in Kansas now - my husband and two sons and I moved out there with his then-wife and three kids - then my family came back to Colorado after 10 months, he stayed, got divorced, is still there...) I told him GREAT - I'll run it with him. Now, I've run off and on my whole life. I've NEVER felt the need to run a marathon. My biggest goals were the Warrior Dash (done, 2010), and a half marathon (not a chance, yet). But, I thought doing this, with him, to support him - sure! So now I've committed to running one in April. I guess that means I need to get back to running consistently... He's been doing great. He's up to 2.5 miles. He used to be a chain smoker, who only drank Pepsi. I'm not sure if he's entirely quit - but I know he's cut WAY back on both. I'm really proud of him for his health overhaul, and hope it keeps going well, and continually in the right direction. I just hope that by the time April comes around, I can keep up with him for encouragement purposes.
