I wanted to post an update of my progress on my virtual journey because I have now made it through one stop on my trek. Through my imagination, I will be visiting old haunts from when I lived in Austria 11 years ago. For more information about my journey, see my previous blog entry: www.sparkpeople.com/mypa
I have walked **18.6 km in Austria** since beginning the journey in early October. October and November have been slow months for me, but I have at least made it to Hardegg, the first stop on my journey.
From Langau to Hardegg, 14.1 km
I began my virtual journey in Langau, Austria, a small village in northwestern Austria near the Czech border. Before I "left" Langau, I made sure to go swimming in the Bergwerksee, this lovely, warm (in summer) lake north of Langau. :) This was a place I visited 11 years ago, and would love to go back one day. For photos of the lake, this person has some beautiful ones on Flickr:
My first stop on the journey is Hardegg (pronounced like "Hardteck") in the Thayatal National Forest and home to a neat, old castle. It is a very isolated, small town. I didn't have the opportunity to spend much time there when I lived in Austria, but I found the surrounding forest so enchanting and the castle so forlorn that I have always wished to return. What I remember most about traveling between Hardegg and Langau 11 years ago was the forest on one side and the patchwork of wheat and sunflower fields on the other. It was a quiet, peaceful landscape, and felt a million miles away from Vienna - even though it wasn't.

In another 10.6 km (15.1 km from Hardegg), I will be in Retz, the town where I lived in Austria and where I took many a walk in the surrounding countryside.

I really can't wait to go back! My mind is already being flooded by memories. So, until then...
Tschüß für heute! (Goodbye for now)
