Thanksgiving Day marked the day where I first logged activity on the Fitbit site. I don't have my Fitbit yet, but I knew that day would be one of the hardest, so I wanted to get active to cancel out some of those unnecessary calories.
I did a 4 mile workout in the morning and twelve hours later, I took another 2.5 mile walk with my daughter. We both really needed it after feasting! Four out of five of my dishes this year were things I've never made before.
Spinach pie - the most intimidating because of all the phyllo dough layers turned out to be quite simple once I got over it and just tried it! Next time, I'll use more spinach. I used two instead of five bags. I was certain there must be a typo in the recipe!
Sweet potato bacon bites - If you have a picky eater, wrap the unwanted food in bacon to convert them! These were a big hit.
Brussel sprouts with bacon - I usually like brussel sprouts, but I think I should've steamed them before the sautee. Lesson learned.
Sweet potato casserole - this was an unplanned dish until my daughter requested it because she knew we had marshmallows and leftover sweet potatoes. It's basically roasted cubed sweet potatoes. At the end, yoiu sprinkle a bit of brown sugar and bake some more. And then add the marshmallows...and banana and bake some more. If you've never topped your sweet potatoes with banana, give it a try. It's a great compliment.
For the main dish, I slow cooked a 6 1/2 pound bone-in turkey breast. Slow cooker cooking scares me! I didn't find a recipe that really spoke to that size of turkey with the bone in, so I popped it in at 8:00 am and wished for the best. I copped out and used a recipe that called for onion soup mix. I know, there went the sodium count, right? I'll do better next year. So, the onion soup mix was the bit of liquid and then there was a gob of other seasonings (garlic powder, onion powder, and dried herbs). For breast meat, it was incredibly juicy, to everyone's surprise. And the flavor was liked by all.
I know I had a serving or more than I should have and I could've backed off on the gravy a little bit, but I renewed my fitness streak that day, so all in all, I feel pretty good about the day. Which brings me back to the fitbit site. I'm still figuring out the syncing with Sparkpeople. I must've oversynced yesterday because it duplicated a bunch of my food items and said I consumed 10k in calories!
My big woo hoo is my step count. The workout in the morning and the walk in the evening gave me close to 15k steps. I enjoy walks with my daughters, so if we could make a regular thing out of it, that would be awesome.
My daughter is working today, so I'm going to do my 4 mile DVD this morning and then start cleaning the house to prepare for decorations! She really wanted to get started yesterday, but she's like me, she needs a clean palette before starting a new project. And we were too busy fretting over food. So, today is cleaning and decorating day. Yay!
