FitBit and Stair climbing

Friday, November 23, 2012

I got my Fitbit in June and have enjoyed using it to monitor my steps and flights of stairs. It HAS challenged me to make the extra effort to get in a few more steps or a few more flights...and sometimes made me realize I hadn't moved enough that day.

With each accomplishment, Fitbit awards you a "badge". I was pleased when I first got the ten flights of stairs badge. Next was 15...whew. But I did it. I figured next would be 20, but it was more! 25! I did that by paying attention and working at it. Then came the NEXT challenge 50 flights of stairs in one day. I figured I could NEVER do that. is a mental challenge also. I kept thinking about it...and realized that I could do with that as I do with so many other things...break it down into manageable bites.

50 flights spread over 10 hours would be only five flights an hour. I can do that. That works out to one flight every 12 minutes...but I didn't see the need for that...just watching the hours.

Day before yesterday, I started during the 6 a.m. hour...and it was so much easier than I expected! I was out of the house for several hours, but had no trouble getting the flights in before and after that jaunt.

I got my 50 flights of stairs DONE right on schedule and before we went out for the evening. I got one more that night when I got home and came up to go to bed.

In 2004 when I returned to this house after two + yrs living elsewhere...I could barely climb the stairs...knees complained, I struggled up the stairs and avoided them if possible. Gradually, HAVING to climb the stairs at least once a day, but more usually more often, it got easier. Then FitBit came along. Now look what I can do...and amazingly, my knees no longer creak and complain, my hips have stopped hurting. I do still occasionally get a cramp in my foot during the night...but that mostly has subsided lately, too. No more restless leg stuff that I had a few yrs ago.

Most of all, though, I am just so pleased that I rose to the challenge and DID it! 50 flights of stairs!!! the next challenge is 100 in a flight every six minutes for ten hours. Not today...but maybe some time in the near future!

Not sure if you are still seeing this, but this was a nice inspirational story, I hate stairs, but I love the badges, so I have to shoot for the 15.....I will work on that 50 one, but that will take a little time. Thanks again
