2012 Tampa Bay Times Turkey Trot Kick-Off Party

Wednesday, November 21, 2012

The last pickup point before the Turkey Trot, this Kick-Off Party was held at Jack White Stadium, Clearwater High School. It's also the location of the finish line & Post Race Party! I had figured I would bypass this and do an earlier pick up. Missed that door of opportunity but Plan B turned out to be a great opportunity!

The infield was covered with activity! Live music entertainment, complementary food including hot soft pretzels, chicken wings and legs, hot dogs, pizza, and kettle corn, along with run gear vendors added to a party atmosphere!

You can see the crews working on the finish line to the left!

Got to the Party at exactly 5:00pm, did my pickup and decided to take the opportunity to take some photos!

I remember 2 years ago, standing in front of this balloon at around 210 pounds!

Last minute registration for all Turkey Trot races!

I hit will call, got our bibs, then went straight to score at shirt pickup!

Had to share what the 2012 shirt looked like so I asked a volunteer to hold one up for y'all...seriously!

So, besides doing pickup, I had been trading emails with LIGHTNINGRUNNER (Mary)! She said she was going to be at this event so it was an opportunity I couldn't miss! We traded texts and she said she had arrived. I figured I would go close to registration and see if I could find the "black Adidas jacket!" I did and, as I had just seen a pic of her at the St Pete RocknRoll HM, spotted her immediately. I got to meet her daughter, husband, and several running friends! We spent a good hour talking about everything under the setting sun! I found out that she lived close to me in Clearwater. We also talked about local races, good Halfs to do, and injuries! I got some great input from Mary's husband on Triathlons too! Overall, it was well worth the effort to meet. Needless to say, and despite the fact that Mary's not overjoyed to do photo ops, friends got her to pose with me for this "official" recording!

What a fun night. I won't be surprised if I don't see her tomorrow! Today's Tampa Bay Times estimated that over 15,000 of my closest friends will be here in the morning to celebrate Thanksgiving Day! This is definitely OUR Thanksgiving Tradition now!

A big WOOT WOOT on this fantastical meet! AND...the icing on the cake to hook up with a treasured Sparky friend. I've met 2 myself so far and it's like I've known them forever..because..well...I kinda have through the cosmos. I've met MsEleni and GoingStrong...Rhonda is an avid runner to so you'd have lots to chat about. They are BOTH great friends and just as genuine in person as they are in SparkWorld...woo too!

All this running talk makes me think hummmmm...we DO live in FL now don't we? What a GREAT way to torch a few calories in record time. I'm just concerned about my knees...maybe I'll do some research and ease on in. I knew with the proper prep you can run at any age. BUT...I've also read about some of my spark friends that have seriously side lined themselves and I don't want THAT to happen.

I have to save my knees for those stair climbing marathons at the consignment gallery to get up to that second floor for the numerous trips that customer questions bring every day.

But still...something to think about! It all LOOKS so fun and such a HEALTHY way to meet and greet!

Woo hoo for you...I'm just so 'bustin' me buttons' proud of you and your sweet wife! emoticon emoticon emoticon

I love the idea of a Turkey Trot tradition for Thanksgiving. Have a great race and I hope to read all about it soon. Tee shirt is a good one, too.

You sure are meeting SparkFriends. We ought to give you extra SparkPoints for all your efforts. You are an incredible SparkFriend. It is so great to meet the people who mean so much. You know that!! It was fantastic to meet you and find that you are just as positive, upbeat, inspiring, and fun in person as you are online!! Until we meet again, Marsha

What a great way to spend a Thanksgiving morning!

Hope you're mending well! And hope to see you at the Lincoln Half next May. The bling is not as impressive as the one Marsha and I collected in St. Pete Women's Half, but crossing the finish line in Memorial Stadium at the 50 yard line, with your photo up on Husker Vision? Priceless.

Only 15,000? emoticon I would say that was an easy crowd to get lost in. Looks like they know how to have a good time and I know you enjoyed it. Hope your achilles did, too.
