Spinning and Swimming and Weights - Oh My!

I went into the Prep Phase of training thinking it would be a piece of cake. I mean, I start off with 5 hours per week of training (this is based on a full year schedule of 300 hours) and gradually work up every 4-6 weeks to more hours until I get to the Build Phase before my A races, which will require 8.5 hours training per week.

So, this is as easy as it's going to get, folks. And if you know me...you understand that when I make a plan, I do it. No flaking out or quitting or whining. I'm pretty fierce and determined at this point.

I'll be completely honest, though, and say I have received a serious and bracing reality check in terms of the sacrifices that need to be made to fit my training into my schedule. I'm blessed to have some leeway with my work hours...but I strive to do my best in that arena as well and I don't like to stroll in at 8:30am every morning just because the pool opened at 7am and I had to squeeze in my morning swim.

So I'm in a period of flex right now...figuring out what works and what doesn't. I suppose Prep Phase is perfect for that kind of thing. I've figured out that the time my daughter is in tae kwon do at the YMCA on Tues and Thurs nights is the perfect time for me to do my strength workouts. As I have been doing for months, I am pretty much just getting up at the crack of dawn to get that cardio in (although, I've added ONE spinning class at 5pm on Thursdays...because I just love the instructor).

In a little over a week, I will push it up to 6 hours per week. I plan to add a spin session each week and add more swimming. So, it will look like this: 3 spin classes (one hour each), 2 strength sessions (30 mins), 4 swim sessions (30 mins). That's a lot, guys.

But, here's the thing. I have a goal. And I WILL achieve it. There is no other option for me right now. You know my world is spinning and things are falling apart. This is what I can control right now. In therapy, my counselor has been telling me to find what is authentic for me. I've spent a lifetime figuring out what everyone else wants FROM me. I have never centered on what I would like for myself.

There are people in my life right now that find me to be selfish and don't approve of choices I am making. They would say to me, "You will never be happy with these decisions you are making. You will not move forward in your life by doing what you are doing. You will never escape your current issues."

To them I can only say, "Watch me."

Great attitude! Some so-called friends can be your enemy to your goals. Let them know that you don't appreciate their attitude. If they don't support you - limit your time with them.

And we ARE watching you! You are such an inspiration for so many. The people who aren't supporting you simply do not understand. Try to forgive them for that, if you can, someday. In the end, you will be inspiring them, too.

My life has been difficult lately, too, and I struggled for about 3 months, but I'm back on track, for fitness and weight loss. It really does matter that there is *something* you can control during these times. Good for you. You remind me that I can do this, too.

You are right about an important thing, you have to find and execute decisions that are best for you because you are the only one who has to live with you every day. If you don't, you won't be happy and fulfilled and you won't be good for anyone else.

Maybe, going after your fitness goals is threatening to those people who are trying to steal your dreams because it shows a weakness or insecurity in themselves. Don't let them project onto you.

Catch your dreams and goals and don't let the dream stealers take them from you! And all of your Sparkies will be right here to cheer and support you!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

A famous athlete said," Your life is made by the obstacles you overcome." Keep going girl! and in time (five or ten years maybe?) the people with negative opinions in your life right now may realize that you were honestly doing the best right thing you could do at this time.

I second everything everyone is saying here. Take it from a 61 year old people pleaser, I finally have learned to focus on me this year. I am so happy when I hear other people learn this at a much younger age. You have such a wonderful life in front of you, and I can't help but think of what a wonderful role model you are for your daughter.

First of all- I would say something to the effect that PEEGYO said- 'Thank you for your concern for me but for right now this is the best thing for me. That could change.
If and when that happens I will adjust. Please keep me in your prayers that this journey will get me right where I am supposed to be- to be healthy, happy, and successful!'

As long as it makes you happy and you stay healthy along the way that is what counts. So keep doing what you are doing cause it is towards the goal you want to acheive and that makes you happy.

What is the saying ... those that matter don't mind, those who mind don't matter. You need to do for yourself. It can only help make you stronger. Don't let the naysayers destroy what you can be. emoticon emoticon

I am absolutely rooting for you: you are on the right path, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise! You are FIERCE and that is partly what makes you YOU.
I am so proud of what you have done so far, and know that you will use the uncertainties in your life as a source of motivation to achieve your goals. Sometimes we excel due to support, and sometimes we grow due to obstacles, in whatever form they take!

Well done, Determined Lady! Go for it!

I watched a documentary about an Ironman-length (but actually called an Outlaw triathlon) race in Nottingham, England tonight. Very inspiring. I think I might have to learn to ride a bike after all. I can definitely see the attraction of the challenge. In the meantime, I'll be following your progress with great interest and enthusiasm!

So what is it your critics think you should be doing? How do THEY think they would handle the stress? It seems to me you are handling it in a very healthy way. I don't get how they think you aren't moving on with your life. It sounds to me like that's EXACTLY what you are doing. I will paraphrase your mom here, "You can do ALL things....(through Christ who strengthens you)." You can, and you are. Rock on.

You have to take care of yourself b/c no one else can do what's right for you. " Love thy neighbor as thyself " means doing the good things for yourself that will enable you to be healthy, happy, and free. You are also showing your daughter that you are important too and you want to take good care of the body God gave you. That is being a good steward. " Never explain yourself to anyone. Because the person who likes you doesn't need it, and the person who dilikes you won't believe it."

You're awesome and inspirational. You have to remember that it's YOUR life and YOU get to live it! You have to have the connections and take care of family and all that, but you can't take care of family until you take care of yourself first. It seems to me that this process is all about becoming the kind of person we want to be, whether that's a Zumba fiend, a triathlete, a walker, a runner, a biker, a swimmer, or even someone that just exercises because they know it's good for them and does most of their work in the kitchen (or staying out of it!) and once you're happy with who you are the people who truly love you HAVE to see that you're on the right path and be happy for you as well.

At least, that's my hope! :-)

You are going to be one beast of a triathlete! I'm so sorry that there are people in your life that are dragging you down in that way. I think you already know what racing and triathlons do for you. Keep going for it! YOU deserve it. And I truly believe that everyone in your life will benefit from how much positive energy tris bring to you.
