It ALL Counts

Monday, November 19, 2012

No, we aren't talking about food or exercise though it certainly is true that it all counts when it comes to nutrition and fitness.

In life, it all counts. It's all connected. You can't attack just one aspect of a problem. That doesn't work.

We have seen it in all the gimmicks being sold on late night TV...eat this, do that, take this...magic pill or potion.

Recently on Dr Oz, they discussed Sensa. Now, I don't mean to criticize anyone who has tried it. If it has worked for you, that's great. If not, I'm sorry, I know you hoped for it to work. During the program, the experts discussed the possible merits of this product and several audience members with varied success stood up to tell their stories. It amounted to this...it might work for some and then again it might not. I think part of the reason for that is something most of us know personally. Our weight is not just about what we take in, nor is it about what we burn off...not entirely anyway. It can be about our relationship with food, our self esteem or lack of it. If I had only eaten when I was hungry or if I only ate what really tasted good or what my body needed, I would never have found Sparkpeople since I wouldn't have needed it. In order to lose weight I had to learn to address more than just my eating and exercise.....I'm still learning.

Recently I have been having problems with my feet. I own the problems, my own mistakes helped to create them. So what do I do? I research, I start to stretch the way I should have done all along. I buy special shoe inserts. I purge my closet of all the footwear that contributed to the problem. I took time off from my running. My feet have gotten better......mostly.

Now I tried to run again. This most recent run, I repeated some mistakes that I should know better than to do. Not a big surprise when I experienced worse pain in my feet and even more discouraging pain now in my knee and ankle.

While I ran, I was aware of some feelings in my feet, legs, & knees. I paid attention enough to see that the inserts in my shoes were probably causing some changes in my form with affects on these areas. DUH

Anyway, back to where I started. It all counts. Can't just put an insert into the shoe to deal with one problem without thinking about the rest.

Well, I'm working on it. I won't let it get the best of me. ARGHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Yup, the puzzle pieces have to go together, and in the right spot, or it just doesn't work. It just means we have to keep working on it. But your puzzle sure is looking good.

I share the foot problem with you. If we had only been a little more aware when we wore those shoes that were fashionable but really harmed our feet. Hope you get better soon.

I hope you're better soon. It sure isn't easy ... finding that balance between what is reasonable to do and what is problematic. If you figure it out, please let me know.

The other day, I was grocery shopping and noticed (as I usually do) some ladies who had come in during their lunch break wearing
high high high heels. I thought, yikes, if
they only knew where that leads. And for
what? Hope your footsies heal soon.
