I was on a course all day today and it involved sitting in one place listening to a guy talking about software. I don't usually sit still for more than 20 minutes at a time. Ask the cats - they consider this characteristic of mine a personal affront. My ankles swelled up from all that sitting and I was in a dim frame of mind when the course finished.

So anyway, I thought, why not drop by Boots and weigh myself? I am due to see the doctor in a month's time and she will weigh me and I wanted to see how my weight is going.

Got on the scale in Boots, money in slot, the scales took FOREVER to decide how much I weigh, spat out the ticket, and . . .

The adjectival (choose your own adjective) scales said I have put on five pounds.

Various things went through my head from 'What the . . . ?' to disbelief.

It wasn't a good moment.

Got home in 'so there' mode and ate various things I shouldn't have. Am now sorry, of course. Well, there's no help for it: it's done. Am trying to think calmly and rationally.

1. I have had problems with these particular scales before. Owing to the length of time they took to weigh me, I'm guessing they are malfunctioning a bit. Yes, I WOULD say that wouldn't I? The problem is I don't KNOW.

2. I have not got any genuine reason to think I could possibly have put on five pounds in weight in the month or so since I saw my doctor. While I've had the odd bad day, I have been pretty conscientious about food.

3. I have been taking loads of exercise: at least one long walk every weekend and a couple of trips to the gym each week as well. Walking to the station, walking other places as a matter of course and from choice. I walked 10 miles yesterday, the furthest I have walked since I was in my 20s. No kidding.

4. People have told me, unprompted, that I am looking thinner and that my whole body shape is changing. I measured myself on Saturday and my waist was an inch smaller. I can SEE the difference when I sit in the bath, dammit! I have had to get rid of loads of clothes that were too small for me and today am wearing a skirt that I'd had for four years and never wore till last month and even last month it was a bit tight and it's now fitting perfectly. With it I am wearing a top that ws too tight at one point and is now looking loose.

So what's going on?

1. I don't think those scales are accurate and I will never weigh myself on them again.

2. I am suffering from premenstrual water retention and general bunged-upness so may be weighing a couple of pounds more than I normally would.

3. General tightening up does not of course lose you pounds, only inches.

And what am I going to do?

1. Recommit to the SparkPlan with a reduction in calories of 200 a day. My calories recently went up, because I was exercising more. I am bringing them down again. I know that I've got a slow metabolism, I've had it for 50-odd years.

2. Go to the gym tonight to lift my mood and by jove it needs it.

3. Call on every ounce of fortitude, determination and restraint I possess and stick with it. I am due to see my doctor in a month's time and want to be half a stone (three kilos/seven pounds) lighter than when she last saw me. At the moment, I don't know how much I weigh in relation to that, so I can't leave anything to chance.

On the positive side, my hiking boots arrived today. They fit, and I am going to be wearing them in this week.

For now, I'm down the gym.

PS: had removed jacket, shoes and handbag before weighing. Can't blame them, unf.

My wii balance board was having a sick moment yesterday,
it said I weighed 10.2 pounds.
My wii character was so skinny.
I redid my test.
I do not weigh the same as one of my cats.

my favourite explanation to myself - muscle weighs much much much more than loose flabby fat.... I have stopped weighing myself and just measure now. What does it matter how much I weigh if I look good and can fit into my jeans?

I think you should rely on what your clothes are telling you. I only ever weigh on the one scale and at the same time of day - first thing. If your ankles were swelled it means you were retaining water so forget that one and keep on going!!

My opinion: toss the weigh-in's like you originally were planning to do! It's not worth the headache or heartache. You know you're doing good! Your clothes are looser, you're fitting into clothes that had been tight only a month ago. Those are your "scale," hon!! KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!! Stop weighing and keep doing :)

I vary so much that, one day, I weighed in around 1 a.m. (awoke to use the bathroom). Then, just for a hoot, reweighed at 7 a.m. I was 6 lbs lighter (with no addl bodily functions). So, the moral of the story is that weight can vary within hours!

Personally, I think all scales are retarded and are habitual liars. I was sick Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. I don't think I had a total of 1200 calories in the 3 days combined. So pleased tell me how I gained 3 pounds when I weighed myself this morning. It is Saturday. I was doing dishes and almost passed out I got so dizzy. I am eating 1440 calories today.

UGH! How frustrating! You're doing so much that's right, it doesn't seem fair that the pounds aren't falling off. Then again, muscle weighs more than fat, and you're definitely losing fat - your clothes fit differently. Hang in there, find some other scales to use if you want to weigh yourself between dr visits, and know that you ARE healthier than you were.

Scales have to be checked to be sure they are correct. My home scale, the doctor's office scale, and the scale at the gym all weigh me differently. What is correct? Well, I go with one and check that one to see if I am down a pound or not. I think the smaller clothes that now fit are the best way to see change and loss. If you are exercising then muscle weighs more than fat. That is not a bad thing to have happen. Good luck and thanks for the blog.

You write so well and how I relate to the bathroom adversary ... aka: scale!! I know JUST how you feel, believe me, and I got so mad one week ago that I bought NEW SCALES just to prove them wrong!!! (Biggest loser scale!) ........ Well, to my dismay, I compared and they were both the same!! ......... What I do love, is the new scales shows down to the nano ounce, so I make a mental game out of it ................. they show ea. ounce, where most scales do one pound or 1/2 ................ childish maybe, but who cares? ..........
THEN after lodging my final complaint on the things, I got a major lecture from my husband who said this: (which I pass along) .......... "DO YOU REALIZE IT IS NOT THE POUNDS BUT THE FACT YOU HAVE TRADED POUNDS AND ADDED LEAN MUSCLE ALL OVER YOUR BODY??!" .......... "Not to mention, you have energy galore , etc. etc ............... So, I wanted to share, MUCH is goin on inside, stronger immune system for one ........... and I could go on and on ......... but would rather leave you with ......... Stay the course and how cool you got new hiking boots!! Have fun!! ......... Jan

I totally feel you on this. The scale doesn't always reflect what the rest of us see. You can look thinner and still weigh the same or more. Is it frustrating? Heck yes! We're not putting in all this work to not see the scale shift. However, if you feel a difference and see the difference in your clothes, do not despair! The scale will eventually change its evil ways as well. You GOT THIS!

I would be very tempted to say that that scale is inaccurate. You can buy a home scale for super cheap and then you will know you have a consistent source of reliable info. Even if your weight did go up it may not be all bad. All that time at the gym could mean more muscle which would show on your waistline, but might make your weight go up. Keep up the good attitude!

Don't despair - I think the only weigh to compare is on the same scale, same clothes and same time of day so you are comparing the same things - I have been trying to make an effort to weigh myself less cause I was becoming obsessive weighing several times a day with different numbers each time - then slipping into the negative spiral.
You sound like you are doing so many great things to improve your health - and you are seeing the results in the way your clothes fit - a much better guide to your progress!

No two scales weigh the same way (no pun intended). Heck, my bathroom scale fluctuates between 4-6 pounds! I can weigh myself three times in a row and get that kind of a fluctuation. It's enough to drive one off the deep end. That, and I'm convinced that scales of any sort attract gravity anomalies and interrupt the space-time continuum, especially when you've started being more health conscious. It's like they KNOW... Total conspiracy. Ranks right up there with Area 51 and The Grassy Knoll. Forget that ol' scale. You can walk 10 miles!!!! Not many people can do that, you know. I know I can't yet.
