What is a Beautiful Bada$$ & How Do YOU Become One?

Monday, November 19, 2012

(Can y'all tell I've been sitting on so very much for much too long, LOL {I have at least another 30 or so blogs started... and no, I do not intend to post them all today, LOL}? Time has also been a factor... feeling remarkably better, stronger, energetic translates into a BUSIER, MORE PRODUCTIVE, SPARKling out in the world, FOCUSSED ME!)

First of all... THANK YOU, K!

I can barely contain my excitement at the wonderful gift you've shared, and I'm here to pay it forward!

(SPARKlers ROCK... and it is only by my associations here that I have managed to find my way back to myself again, and stay the course despite considerable challenges)!

SPARKlings, meet my newest CRUSH (and I am not the sort of person who gets overly excited about strangers, and I have no time for 'celebrity'):

It's my pleasure to introduce to you, Marianne Kane!

My favourite points:
• Thou shalt partake in positive self-talk and speak of your body with pride and dignity.
• Thou shalt always have fun.
• Though shalt continue toward your goal, despite the negativity from others around you.
• Thou shalt refrain from comparing herself to others.
• Thou shalt focus on improvement and NOT perfection.
• Thou shalt know that inner strength breeds outter strength and outter strength breeds inner strength.
• Thou shalt never quit.

Chris Mason's WANNABEBIG Serious About Muscle

As I feel my physical strength returning in full force, I am itching to FINALLY put my body to the real test of building some serious muscle!

Unfortunately I must remain careful and go slow (and since we are in the last six months of restoring our house since the flood 2.5 years ago my home gym remains unavailable... fortunately renovating is a strength training program in itself... we'll be taking down our chimney in a couple of weeks, and my job will be to carry all of the cement... in between shovelling snow, of course). I still cannot believe (and grieve!) how much muscle I lost following my brain injury almost four years ago... and the ridiculous ways I came to compensate for my lack of strength, and the increased bulk of my body.

Only just this weekend, in using my legs properly, did I come to a full realization of how I weakened my own knees simply because of the *former and reducing* extra bulk in my thighs (somewhere along the way I had stopped keeping my feet pointed forward and knees straight out when stooping/squatting, I had also stopped using my back and retaining good posture)... normal, healthy body positions now feel remarkably weird and ungainly as I continue to gain strength and practice correct alignment in all my movements... it's no wonder my tendons became stretched out in all of the wrong places (likely why I blew out my knee two years ago).

I still have to really concentrate to maintain form and use my body correctly... though thankfully my posture is fully restored, and my knees almost back to normal! I am once again back to the point where I can do anything my life requires of me without paying a price for doing it (though I still can't quite kneel in church yet, lol)... I now spend my whole day in motion, using/pushing my body, and I end my day with strength and energy to spare (though sometimes it's not a lot, LOL), and no serious pain anywhere. I have stamina and resilience again. I stride straight and tall. I am (and once again) excited by possibilities (I am SO happy with Marianne's Beginner's Body Weight Workouts).

...And, if I can do this, so can YOU!

WOOHOO super blog post, Ramona! I love it! Girls Gone Strong are such a wonderful bunch of inspirational women! I really adore them and feel so pleased that they give away all their wonderful advice FREE OF CHARGE to anyone/everyone.

I have been using Marianne's kettlebell and bodyweight workouts since this summer, and she is one tough cookie! I really like her...she's funny and down to earth, and isn't one of those annoying fitness instructor types. I know you know what I mean by that, LOL. Her accent is lovely, too. Belfast girl!

I haven't read WANNABEBIG yet--thank you in advance for the link! You always have the best stuff. Have you checked out Stumptuous? She is a fab Canadian, like YOU, with tons of great advice for women weightlifters.

amona, I noticed the same deterioration of my formerly great posture and other "ergonomic" stuff, just as you were discussing. The posture was really obvious to me. I remember I used to walk so tall and strong, and one day this summer, just before I decided to get back on track with my food and exercise, I realised just how much I was slouching. When I tried to hold myself tall and strong, it was DIFFICULT. I mean very difficult! And so tiring. That was a pretty tough realisation, but I think it was pretty important for me to come to it so that I could move forward with changing things. I've been exercising like a madwoman and lifting weights again, so I'm getting stronger and leaner, slowly but surely. I am definitely walking more upright (LOL), and just generally feel stronger. You will too--it happens before you know it. emoticon
