Do these boobs make me look fat?

Monday, November 19, 2012

Last week, I posed for some pictures with colleagues. When I received the digital copies, I was unpleasantly surprised. I looked shapeless and matronly. What happened??

When I took a closer look, I realized that I looked heavy because my boobs appeared oversized and saggy. You see, I'm the classic apple-shape; large chest, no defined waist and smaller arms and legs. There was only one thing to do. Buy some new bras!

I visited my favorite department store. Turns out they had a "bra fitting" expert on hand. I learned that although my cup size had stayed the same, my band size had dropped and the loose band was causing my bras to "lift" in the back, creating this saggy effect up front. I had NO IDEA this was happening until I saw the photo.

Following her recommendations, I tried on about eight different bras in various sizes before finding one that provided me with proper comfort, lift and separation. So my lesson learned? If you are apple-shaped like me and look fat in photos--it might be because you are wearing the wrong sized bra. Run, don't walk to the nearest department store if your weight has changed by 15-20 pounds and get fitted.

Now, my bustline is higher, "perkier" emoticon which actually makes me look younger. Whodathunkit?

The funny things we learn on this journey to better health.

Onward and downward! emoticon

Girl, ain't that the truth!!! I ran myself into a serious breast reduction... down 2 cup sizes (from a 38J to a 38G). You know something is up when your cups are baggy... lol! Even for hour-glass/pear-shaped girls like me, ill-fitting bras are not in our best interested.

Another tip worth sharing is the fact that its always good to gegt fitted in a specialty boutique if you are top heavy... department stores and chains tend to fit you for what they carry opposed to what you need. Hence the drama of trying on lots of bras before getting the right fit.

That's the truth. I tried these caicque bras at Lane Bryant and I can see my boobs instead of my tummy when I look down. Makes such a difference. Glad you found it out now

Very true! I'm wearing the right size bra, but the damn things are still the same size as they were 80 pounds they still make me look heavier than I am. I have at least 20 pounds of boobage and it is throwing off my BMI!

I've always wanted to go for a bra fitting, but haven't yet. I'll put that on my bucket list.

Thanks for sharing! That's something I haven't payed much attention too but with my clothes getting saggier I'm betting so are those puppies and I haven't noticed. Lol.

    Hahaha, you're singing my tune!

I think my band size might have gone down a tiny bit. I have these ill-advised wireless cupless stretchy bras that are a bit small, so I wear one over top of my regular underwire bra when I need some extra lift! I'm getting by on that for now; will probably get new bras in the new year. I hope I'm a band AND a cup size down, but I'm not gonna hold my breath. These suckers are PERSISTENT.

I loved the title of your blog! I also carry my weight in my chest and belly, with no butt and skinny legs, Unfortunately I live in a very small town and don't have any bra fitters, but have been able to order some that seem to fit better. The problem I've found that the size that works great in one brand doesn't necessary fit the same in another brand or even another style. And like Archimedes pointed out, $35 (or more) is a lot to spend on a bra and not even be sure if it will fit right. Can be frustrating!

I noticed that when I finally went to get new bras recently. Since I take a monthly picture, I can tell the difference and my new bras make me look better, even if they are cheap wireless ones. I'm a whole cup size and band size smaller, it really makes me look better and more in proportion.

Your blog made me laugh! I know it's so important to get a good fitting bra. I'm long overdue but trying to find an affordable one is hard!

Many women don't realize they are wearing the wrong size bra. A long time ago, Oprah Winfrey had a show on how to properly fit a bra. I was wearing the wrong size !
Wearing the right bra really does make a world of difference.

Of course, one day, clothing manufacturers will make affordable bras ! I buy my bras online or during Macy's sales. Otherwise, they cost $35 each !!! That's just an insane price to pay for a bra, if you ask me.

A good bra is SOOOO important. I went through a similar issue at the gym until I found a good sports bra.
