There are turkeys (like the kind you eat on Thanksgiving) We are not referring to this kind of turkey in this post... We LOVE this kind of turkey...
And then there are turkeys (like the ones who are driving with me on I-35 talking on their cell phone and being irresponsible)
(And also those who seem to intuitively know how to irritate you and derail your day)
Sparkmember Tortise 110 eloquently described the problem and a solution in her blog on Tuesday, "Dealing with People Who Deplete Us"... she said, www.sparkpeople.com/mypa
"I found a quote this morning that helped me with my worrying about someone else's drama and am sharing it here. I know we all get caught up in other's stuff from time to time. This is from Martha Beck:
"When we force ourselves to connect against our heart's desires, we create false, resentful relationships; when we disconnect from the people who deplete us, we set them free to find their tribes while we find ours."
My brother, in contrast, has long had a considerably less genteel attitude, and motto:
DON'T LET THE TURKEYS GET YOU DOWN
When you feel like this:
You must enforce THIS:
So THIS Thanksgiving (and holiday season) when pressures are high and our natural equanimity is threatened, let us embrace one philosophy or the other, and breathe free and strong, unfettered by holiday knuckleheads of all kinds...
We can do this.
