Week 14 of Marathon Training - 20 Mile Run!!!

Sunday, November 18, 2012

Crazy week!

The folks from Competitor Group flew out for the Kick Off Party for Rock n Roll St. Pete and for the Women's Half Marathon (WHM) St. Pete Race, so I was busy with them. Kick Off Party went well, then the WHM Expo. While I was the Ambassador for Rock n Roll St. Pete this year, I really wasn't involved at the Expo. I had no idea how much work it was! Thursday was a lot of heavy lifting and setting up for merchandise displays for WHM. My booth was pretty simple to set up. Then, a staff dinner which was nice, but I was so tired, and then had to drive the hour home. On Friday and Saturday was the Expo so I was on my feet ALL day! I felt so stiff and my run Friday after the Expo was horrible. I got through it but it was so hard. Had Saturday off from running, but from the constant standing from 8:30am - 5pm, I was concerned about how it would affect my 20 mile run the next day.

My plan was to run 6.9 miles before the WHM, then run the 13.1 during the race. Finally got to bed around 10:30pm and set the alarm for 4:30am. Woke up at 4am...

Did the 6.9, partially along the race course. Weather was so nice and cool and I was along the water the entire time. Finished with enough time to potty before the race started! I had planned to run with the 2:15 pace group, but as I got in the corral, I decided to start with the 2:00 group and see how I felt. The pacer was awesome, walked every water stop for a full minute which was helpful. I stayed with them until Mile 7, then had to walk a bit more. At that point I was determined not to let the 2:15 group catch up to me! I had to walk a LOT, every mile and sometimes in between. The miles were catching up to me and it became a mental game. Approached mile 10 and knew I only had a 5k to go!

I finished at 2:05:46 and was super happy! It's not anywhere close to a personal best for a Half for me, but considering I had run the 6.9 miles before the race, I was very proud of myself. I ended up doing the 20 miles at a 9:21 pace and am happy with it. Looking forward to a couple days off!

If you're in a market with a Women's Half Marathon, I highly recommend the race. Very well organized, love the bling with the detachable charm and the designer goodie bag! This was my first Half Marathon in 11/2009 and today it was my 19th. Enjoying the journey! One month until my marathon!!!

Sounds like a great run and good timing. What type of shoes do you wear for running? Do you wear insoles too?

I have been eying the WHM and a few other Rock n Rolls since last Saturday's race in San Antonio.
