Couch to half marathon

Sunday, November 18, 2012

Sooo, at school, I am part of a group that student teaches all year instead of just one semester. There are about 18 of us in that group and we are all at the same school and in the same classes. One of the girls wants us all to sign up to run a half marathon in April, and quite a few of the others have said they will. I am 50 pounds overweight and haven't run in over a year, but i think I am going to join them. I figure at the very least it gets me to work out three times a week because there will be accountability and comradery. I am struggling with not wanting to hold anybody back, but want to join them. I think this group will be understanding and encouraging though so I'm kind of excited!

I really have no desire to run 13 miles, it seems like it would be boring, but I have always wanted to say I ran a 5k so I can accomplish that at the very least :)

First the desire, then the program. Good luck as you work toward it!!!

I'm actually toying with a very similar idea. Currently, I weigh 225, am student teaching, and am thinking about running a half marathon in May except I'm the one who would need to find a friend to do it with me. Make sure you are doing this for the right reasons. I've been trying to determine if running a half marathon so soon would be safe for me. My biggest concern is getting an injury from trying to do too much too soon (there's a long family history of bad knees). I do know people who walk most of a half marathon though, and they say walking it is even harder than running (since it takes longer). Also, if you want to run a 5K, check out to see if there are shorter races at the same place. I know the half marathon I'm looking at has a 5K I could do if I'm unprepared (they let you switch the day of). Overall, if it would motivate you towards your goals, I'd say go for it! It would be quite an accomplishment to finish a half marathon! You can do it!
