God Is!

Sunday, November 18, 2012

Psalm 46:1-3 GOD is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear. Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though its waters roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah

God is......what is God to you? Is He all that He says He is? Can He be trusted to do what He says He will do? What do we use as a measuring stick to verify His credibility?

We have to go back through the years and look at the reliability of God. He is everything that He has said He would be. He has been proven through the years to stand the test of time. There are multitudes of prophecies about Him that have proven true. His credibility stands and rests on His faithfulness to continue being God even in the face of opposition who would try to destroy His name, His reputation and His people!

God is our refuge! This Hebrew word for “refuge” is the word “machseh” and it means a shelter, refuge, protection, fortress; a hope; a place of trust; a shelter from storm. God is a place of trust where we can run to when we need hope for tomorrow; protection from our enemies and a shelter from a storm. He has made provision for us to be safe!

God is our strength! The Hebrew word for “strength” is “'oz”. This noun comes from the verb 'azaz, “to be firm and strong”. It carries the meaning of being powerful and having security; to be firm and strong. God is powerful; He stands firm and is strong enough to provide the security that His people need to meet the challenges of life. He is the anchor for our souls! He never changes or turns His back on His people. He is there for them!

God is a very present help in trouble! The phrase “very present help” means that it is abundantly available help; a help that has been found to be reliable, or proven to be a reliable stronghold in the past, so that any future calamity is no reason to fear.

One thing that I've learned about God through the years is that I can count on Him to provide for me, to help me through difficult times and to bring me through in better condition than I was at the start.... because of His faithfulness! When you see that He's done it for you once, you can know that He'll do it again when you get in another rough spot!

Therefore.....because He is our strength and refuge and a very present help in trouble.....we will not FEAR!

What is fear? False evidence appearing real! Why.....because it comes telling you that the extreme worst case scenario is going to happen to you; the thing that would be the worst in the whole world. It magnifies it's ability to frighten and paralyze you so you will not take action against it. Webster's 1828 dictionary defines fear as a painful emotion or passion excit6ed by an expectation of evil, or the apprehension of impending danger. Fear is an uneasiness of mind, upon the thought of future evil likely to befall us. It brings anxiety, dread, terror and fright. It removes any sense of security from your heart and tells you that there is no way out of this situation.

But God......says that He is our protection; He is our refuge; He is our security; He is our hope; He is our help! Even though the earth be removed, and the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though its waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with its swelling. Even though it looks as if things are not going to work out or there's a possibility that we might not win this battle we have a choice to make; we can either choose to allow fear into our thought processes, to take up residence there and build a stronghold that reinforces it's plan to steal, kill and destroy us, or we can remind ourselves that God is on our side; He is taking care of us; He is our Source and Provision; He is working this problem out for our good; He is fighting for us and with us! He is our very present help right now; proven to be strong and secure, over and over again! We determine the outcome of this battle in the mind. It comes as we choose to fear or believe and trust God!

Selah.....pause and thing about that!

Psalm 46:10,11 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

God's Word Translation 1995 says of Psalm 46:10: Let go [of your concerns]! Then you will know that I am God. I rule the nations. I rule the earth.

Barnes' notes on the Bible commentary says “Be still - The word used here - from רפה râphâh - means properly to cast down; to let fall; to let hang down; then, to be relaxed, slackened, especially the hands: It is also employed in the sense of not making an effort; not putting forth exertion; and then would express the idea of leaving matters with God, or of being without anxiety about the issue.”

Be still doesn't mean to just cease from activity. It means to cast down the fear and let go of your concerns about the situation you are facing or the difficulty you are currently in. It means that you quit trying to figure it out and relax, resting in God's arms. He rules the nations! He will be exalted! He rules the earth! There is no one bigger than our God! If you're fighting against God you might as well give it up before you ever start because you won't win! God will be exalted in the earth! He will be magnified in the nations! All eyes will see that God rules! He is the LORD! And He is our refuge!

Selah....pause and think about that!

Father, I thank You for ruling the nations! I thank You that when we are troubled we can rest in You and know that You will fight for us! I thank You for being the Lord of hosts; the Captain of the Army of God! I thank You that You are greater than what we see going on around us and that we can place our trust in You knowing that You will come through for us. You are a very present help in the time of trouble. Father, I rebuke fear in the hearts of Your people this morning. I command fear to leave their minds right now, in the Name of Jesus! Fear, you are a spirit with no power! You have been defeated by the the Lord of All! The Lord God Almighty rises up against the spirit of fear and casts you down. You must leave, in Jesus' name. Father God, I thank You that we can know that when we place our faith in You we will see change in our situations. I thank You for giving us the freedom to choose faith over fear. Father, we resist the temptation to fear right now! We stand against it firmly planted in You with our eyes focused on You. Father, I ask You to give peace now into the hearts of Your people as they focus their eyes and hearts on You. Let them feel Your presence and know that You are right there with them. Calm the storm in their hearts and minds as well as the storm that rages about them. Thank You, Father. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

I have a special thank you for you, Avanell...You know what I am talking about...you have stuck with me when I didn't even feel like anyone should stick with me. But there you were holding my hand. Well, with you and dh, and my pastor this morning, his wife I get it! In this new world, I must stay in His Word almost all the time! Totally. And Speak it out! That is hard for someone that is basically shy...but I am and it WORKS! I have to tell you that I have had 3 lessons in the last couple days...all on 2 Thessalonians 2 so that is what the Lord had for me! I just want to thank you extra special for being such a great friend! You are the BEST! emoticon

God is One that I can trust when I can't even trust myself. God is the One who has said, "Prove Me/ test Me" when I have failed miserably.

Thank you, Avanell, for making me realize that He is the One that has never forsaken me and fled. Blessings to you this Lord's day, and for making your readers read this more than once! Me included.
