Nutrition Smackdown - Blog 1 (Gingerbread Edition)

Saturday, November 17, 2012

* A New Series of Blogs where I will be analyzing foods and beverages for you. I will take suggestions of products and restaurant menu items u want me to do then do a indepth SMACKDOWN of what your really looking at! I will breakdown the nutrtional BS from packaging and tell u what the numbers and words really mean*

This First few Blog-episodes I am going to be doing the Holiday seasonal snacks at Starbucks Coffee Company... Get Ready for the Smackdown!!!

Today will be - Starbucks Seasonal Holiday Gingerbread Loaf:

This is a terrible Choice for anyone on a Sugar, Fat or Carb Reduced Diet. For the Average Women on a 400kcal Breakfast or men on a 500kcal breakfastyou would definately be breaking the bank with this one comming in at 440kcals! OUCH!!!! SUCH A CALORIE KILLER!!!

This one also brings along 14g of fat. Being that its a processed Food it probably is high in saturated and Trans Fats and who really needs or wants higher bad cholesterol and higher triglycerides.

This is probably the worst choice of them all because its a CARB NIGHTMARE!!! hopping in at 74carbs with only 1g of Fiber = 73 Net Carbs (Probably most of which are sugar and starch carbs)... which will spike your blood glocose Levels big time. For the average women on a carb reduced diet they recive about 45g carbs for a regular meal like lunch and dinner. For me being a larger diabetic man i get 60g carbs so even for me this is a rediculous choice!

Protein??? Yes 5g! for a sweet treat like this its not a bad amount but the ratio of CARBS vs. Protein is terrible!

Calories- 440kcal - FAIL
Carbs - 73 Net - FAIL
Fiber - 1g - FAIL
Protein - 5g- MINIMAL PASS

Tips - Diet and Diabetic Nightmare. Choose a healthier snack like a 100g Greek yogurt instead.

Sorry, have to defend Sbux a little here. They have phased out all trans fats and there are healthy choices to be made for both breakfast and lunch. Actually quite a few of them - Howard is on a new healthy kick. There is a great whole wheat egg white wrap, a wrap with turkey or turkey bacon or oatmeal. A pastry or quick bread (from anywhere) is never going to be a good choice!

I never go to Starbucks but I can imagine that there's not a lot of low calorie options.
Thanks for sharing!
