Day One of my exercise streak and I have permanently moved my laptop to the treadmill desk. That means I am not sitting on the sofa in the family room listening to CNN while I Spark. I am wearing my slippers and going 1.7 mph. I will get some new shoes with zippers to wear on the treadmill, something easy to get on and off. I like this location, next to a window where I can see the birds and squirrels in the tree and running along the fence.
I read a study about people who were very active on a daily basis yet it was questioned if that was enough exercise. They sit watching TV or on the computer the rest of the time.
"But the thing that started dawning on people is what about the other 23 hours of the day when you're not exercising?" The theory that being sedentary, or not moving for long periods of time, is an independent risk factor for heart disease. These studies have shown that the amount of time a day even extremely active people spend sitting directly predicts waist circumference, blood pressure and bad cholesterol. One Australian study has even demonstrated that interrupting sedentary time by simply standing up can have a positive effect. "It's exciting if it is a risk factor, because it's easily corrected. It's kind of low-hanging fruit to get people to stand up once every half hour."
So in an attempt to improve my health, regardless of my weight I am walking on the treadmill and Sparking.
Last night played cards and shot pool with our new neigbors. I drank wine and had one potato chip. It was fun and I am glad I avoided food. Tonight we are going to a Christmas dinner party and again I will be mindful of what I am doing with the food.
Have fun this weekend my Spark Friends!
