Blogging From the Treadmill Desk This Morning

Saturday, November 17, 2012

Day One of my exercise streak and I have permanently moved my laptop to the treadmill desk. That means I am not sitting on the sofa in the family room listening to CNN while I Spark. I am wearing my slippers and going 1.7 mph. I will get some new shoes with zippers to wear on the treadmill, something easy to get on and off. I like this location, next to a window where I can see the birds and squirrels in the tree and running along the fence.

I read a study about people who were very active on a daily basis yet it was questioned if that was enough exercise. They sit watching TV or on the computer the rest of the time.

"But the thing that started dawning on people is what about the other 23 hours of the day when you're not exercising?" The theory that being sedentary, or not moving for long periods of time, is an independent risk factor for heart disease. These studies have shown that the amount of time a day even extremely active people spend sitting directly predicts waist circumference, blood pressure and bad cholesterol. One Australian study has even demonstrated that interrupting sedentary time by simply standing up can have a positive effect. "It's exciting if it is a risk factor, because it's easily corrected. It's kind of low-hanging fruit to get people to stand up once every half hour."

So in an attempt to improve my health, regardless of my weight I am walking on the treadmill and Sparking.

Last night played cards and shot pool with our new neigbors. I drank wine and had one potato chip. It was fun and I am glad I avoided food. Tonight we are going to a Christmas dinner party and again I will be mindful of what I am doing with the food.

Have fun this weekend my Spark Friends!

i bought a table for my bike, but it didn't work.
getting up every half hr means remembering all day. not that easy. once i start exercising, that's what i'm doing and i keep going. starting is hard. getting up is relatively easy. remembering is hard.

Nice! I've also been using a treadmill desk, although I'm only been going at 1mph since I decided to try and work on it (so around 4-5 hours some days). It's quite a work out and you definitely feel it! I hit a new weight low today and it seems like cheating since I've kind of stopped working out as much as I used to... haha. I've documented my progress if anyone is interested here on my blog: www.treadmilldeskdiary.com

I am so jealous of your creation - I'm working on one myself. It just makes so much sense to move while we spark!

I think you're really on to something. Yesterday I stayed active all day, doing housework, up and down stairs to the laundry, etc. I say down for about 10 minutes every hour to drink a cup of water. I felt good, and actually snacked much less than I normally do. Then I lifted weights for 40 minutes and did a 60 minute yoga class at the gym. I'm not sure i could type and walk at the same time, but I will plan to spend more time on my feet than on my butt!

Must not have been a Lay's potato chip if you only ate one. Cool having your laptop set up so you can Spark and walk at the same time. I need to work on moving more after dinner. Once I get comfy on the couch, when I have a hard time getting up. May need to set up a timer to remind me.

How fun that you can have your laptop at your treadmill. I've installed FitBolt on my laptop so that I get reminders every 30 minutes that I need to get up and move. It's free and easy.
Have fun at your dinner party, and great work being "mindful"!

Thanks for sharing that study with us. I've been trying to figure out why some weeks I loose and some weeks gain. Will try adding more movement this week.

I have a rule that I am to walk 10 minutes of every hour and not sit longer than 20 minutes. Sounds like I am on the right track.
