I got back from Key West on Wednesday. I had a great time. Nine of us went down to celebrate my husband's 50th birthday. We rented a house .4 miles from Duval street and 4 blocks from the beach. I got to relax, run, eat, drink, and walk a lot!
One of the days I was running, I compared this trip and the one I took two weeks ago to Jamaica in reference to weight maintenance. We went to an all -inclusive in Jamaica. I ran every day - but only ran 2.5 - 3 miles per day. It was very hot down there AND I had to keep running the same loop around the resort. That got old as the week went. I ran by myself. In Key West, we walked non-stop. Every time we went shopping, etc. we walked 3.5 miles. Most days we walked this route 3 times! Also, I varied my running routes and ran 3.5 - 5.6 miles per day. I ran with my brother.
Here are some pictures of my running route in Key West:
(My brother - my running partner - is in this one)
My brother at the Southern Most Point (I made him stop running to get the picture!)
We saw tons of roosters on our runs in the morning. They were everywhere!
Of course - we had to run by Mile 0!!
The food was great in Jamaica and Key West. When I was in Jamaica, I ordered healthy options at the sit-down restaurants. I went off the wagon at the buffets. I test tasted way too much! I also consumed a fair amount of alcohol. In Key West, we went to all sit-down restaurants. I brought breakfast items from home and ate breakfast at the house three mornings. I ate cottage cheese (one of my staple foods) for afternoon snack. That helped a lot on my calorie consumption. One day, we went out to the Sunset Key for lunch. Here is a picture of my yummy salad:
That is lettuce wrapped in thin cucumber slices with thin apple slices and almonds on top. The citrus dressing was light. That is goat cheese and salmon on the side - YUM! This was a healthy lunch, problem was I coupled it with a Key Lime Colada. Tasted great, but high on calories! And, as much of a "party" town Key West is, I did not drink as much alcohol as I did in Jamaica. I think I drank more in Jamaica because it was an all-inclusive.
One of the BIG reasons I think I did not consume as many calories in Key West is because I used the SparkPeople food tracker on my iPhone. I think I might have driven my husband and friends nuts with it because I would look up meals on the menu and compare calories before I ordered. And, of course I would tell them how many calories their choices were! My son started picking meals with lower calories. Not everyone liked this, but, oh well! I was also able to get on SparkPeople a lot and read all of my Sparkbuddies' status updates. And... I updated my status everyday pertaining to my running. I felt I had to account for it. In Jamaica it would have cost me a small fortune to go on-line, so I did not.
Relaxation is soooo important when I go on vacation. I work with small children and 40 women and hold vacations as "sacred". I slept really good at night and enjoyed the hot tub at the house we rented every single day. I even got pampered one day at a beach resort down the street in Key West. Every thirty minutes they handed out watermelon slices, sprayed light water, handed out frozen washclothes, cold apple cider, and frozen cucumbers!
It was really cool (excuse the pun)!
So, here is the verdict:
Jamaica - weight gain = 2 pounds
(which I lost before my next trip)
Key West - weight loss = 1 pound
I leave you with a picture of my husband and I in Key West...
