My new trousers

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Friday, November 16, 2012

A couple of weeks ago, I bought a new pair of black trousers in a UK size 18 (US size 16). This was my Christmas ambition: to get into a size 18.

Today I wore them to work.

Pause for wild applause.

It is stretching a point (and several seams, a waistband and the zip at the front) to say that they fit, but I have worn them all day, nothing has gone 'pop' and I have not had to take them off the minute I got home because they were causing me agony.

It's very noticeable that I have lost a lot of weight from my glutes (thank you, elliptical cross-trainer) and not much from my gut. Viewed sideway in my long mirror, I am an odd sort of multiple-bulge shape. If I jump up and down a bit it all looks like ferrets fighting in a rubber sack.

But anyway. I am wearing a size 18 in Marks and Spencer's trousers.

And now, as far as I am concerned, let the true battle commence. This is the end of the beginning, in Spark terms. We now move on to the middle phase, during which I have to lose about another 70 or 80 pounds. That's the job between now and Christmas 2013 when I want to be a UK size 14. After that, we get to the last 15 pounds or so, the hard-to-shift final countdown, which I expect to take all of six months. My deadline is 30 June 2014, two years after I joined SP. I'd like to be a size 10 by then. When I make it, I expect to be about 120 pounds. I'm not bothered so much about my final weight as my final size because it's easier for me to guess what size I should be than what weight I should be.

As a reward to myself, I went looking in M&S for snazzy real silk underwear, and found what you see below. I'd already eyed these up quite a few times but the clincher was today they'd been reduced in price by almost 40 per cent. There was a slight issue in that the biggest size was a UK 16, but then again . . . I grabbed.

I do not usually display my underwear on the internet but this is a special occasion.

I am enough of a realist not to buy the size 8, but only just. I can (with some difficulty) get the cami on. I need to lose 20 pounds or so to wear it comfortably. Once I'm small enough, I'll wear it incessantly and will probably go hiking in it.

I bought a sports bra too. This is not gorgeous or glamorous and although it zips up the front, putting it on is reminiscent of being swallowed by a boa constrictor. The zip has a little lapel under it, which I discovered (the hard way) needs to lie flat when you do the zip up as it is designed to stop you getting bits of your chest caught in the teeth of the zip. Ow.

This is probably all routine for the jocks and jockesses on here. For me, whole new vistas are opening up. It's like a journey of discovery and every day there's something new.

So what's next? I can't wait to find out!

"So what's next? ...can't wait to find out!"

Me neither.... I await with bated breath the next installment..

I loved your cami picture... since most shades of lavender/purple/etc are my fav's... You must have guessed by now... I would love to have something like that in my wardrobe... Maybe next year... or next life... someday.

Really? What is next? finding a much more exciting place to wear the new underwear.

I like the way you look at rewards, to say nothing of the way your sense of humor works.

Onward and downward (in weight, I mean!).....which is a great thing here on Spark! You're a woman with a plan (check), timetable (check), visuals (check) and rewards (check)......seems like you're a walking and blogging testimonial to the Sparkpeople method!

Excellent results, my friend! Applause!!!!!!!!!

I learned from this blog and the comments: such as size 18 UK is 16 US - darn! Now I'm real jealous, as I'm still struggling in a size 18 US. Oh well, there's hope.

I love the new cami - really beautiful. But I agree, we may have to take up a collection for bail if you only wear it and your new boots when you go walking. You certainly wouldn't lack for male attention. LOL

"Ferrets fighting in a rubber sack." I love the imagry, and yeah, I'm sure that if I ever got the nerve to look at myself in the mirror, I'd see a similar sight. It just doesn't seem fair that women carry so much fat in our stomachs, especially when we're (I'm) so far past childbearing age.

Love your blog.

A friend from Australia was visiting us in the US last year and she tried on some size 14 jeans in Target that were too small. She was really chuffed, but I suspect the same ones in Oz are size 16.

Great underwear. When you can wear them you MUST post a pic of you in them. emoticon

    It's a good day for Size 18s!

Today was the first day I could fit back into my old Size 18 jeans (American Size 18s, of course, so larger than yours, I'm sure, but 18s nonetheless)!

Congratulation

One of the things I love most about Sparkpeople is the humour.
The camisole is really pretty. It can be strange to think we deserve pretty things sometimes- but we do. And we deserve the bodies to slip into them.
Thank you fro meking me smile.

My 2 cents (or the UK equivalent...farthings? pence? no idea, I try to stay with electronic money, not the real kind)...anyway, my 2 cents is to wait for the summer before king about in your silk cami. I'm afraid you'd freeze certain bits & pieces if you were to try it anytime in the next few months. emoticon

Oooh! Size 18 trousers - still a distant dream for me. I'm still in M&S stretch wide leg trousers. Can get into a size 20 but only because they are v-e-r-y s-t-r-e-t-c-h-y!! However, it has been noted by my OH that the ones I have which are closer to my true size are now very baggy and unflattering and only stay up due to the stretch. emoticon Must be bad because he actually suggested I threw them out and bought some new ones! Usually he tries to divert me from buying new clothes as I'm not very good at throwing out the old ones.

Anyway - great job - you are doing so fantastically well. emoticon

Long lasting extremely wild applause is coming from me! In fact, a standing ovation!

Right now I am fighting the final 15 in the Battle of the Bulge. I hope to "be there" at the goal of 120 by Christmas 2013. At a pound a month that is doable--I think!

Oh I loved reaching a size 18! And I am looking forward to the next time I reach a size 18!! Ha ha!

Isn't it funny though how for some people being a size 18 is tantamount to entering the 7 circles of Hell.... and for some of us, it is virtually a dream come true?!

Well done you! And when you go hiking in your lingerie... do let me know the time and place and I'll be sure and show up in a babydoll or something!

Happy Days!

*Sigh* Seems like the belly is the hard part.

Don't worry about your pic of underwear. I closed my eyes while I was looking at it. In any case, it seems like a great motivator. I have a couple of suits I'd dearly like to get back into.

Don't know a thing about sports bras, I've never worn one, or any bra for that matter. The clothing store doesn't have any in the men's section.

Ok, this was hilarious. You are a fantastic and funny writer. But yay for you and your new pants! Clothing goals are easier for me too. I know what weight I was when I looked by best--but I was in high school then! The number doesn't go down quickly on the scale, but I can definitely tell when my clothes fit better! Keep it up. Once you fit in the new underwear, definitely go hiking in it--you gotta show that off!
