My new trousers

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Friday, November 16, 2012

A couple of weeks ago, I bought a new pair of black trousers in a UK size 18 (US size 16). This was my Christmas ambition: to get into a size 18.

Today I wore them to work.

Pause for wild applause.

It is stretching a point (and several seams, a waistband and the zip at the front) to say that they fit, but I have worn them all day, nothing has gone 'pop' and I have not had to take them off the minute I got home because they were causing me agony.

It's very noticeable that I have lost a lot of weight from my glutes (thank you, elliptical cross-trainer) and not much from my gut. Viewed sideway in my long mirror, I am an odd sort of multiple-bulge shape. If I jump up and down a bit it all looks like ferrets fighting in a rubber sack.

But anyway. I am wearing a size 18 in Marks and Spencer's trousers.

And now, as far as I am concerned, let the true battle commence. This is the end of the beginning, in Spark terms. We now move on to the middle phase, during which I have to lose about another 70 or 80 pounds. That's the job between now and Christmas 2013 when I want to be a UK size 14. After that, we get to the last 15 pounds or so, the hard-to-shift final countdown, which I expect to take all of six months. My deadline is 30 June 2014, two years after I joined SP. I'd like to be a size 10 by then. When I make it, I expect to be about 120 pounds. I'm not bothered so much about my final weight as my final size because it's easier for me to guess what size I should be than what weight I should be.

As a reward to myself, I went looking in M&S for snazzy real silk underwear, and found what you see below. I'd already eyed these up quite a few times but the clincher was today they'd been reduced in price by almost 40 per cent. There was a slight issue in that the biggest size was a UK 16, but then again . . . I grabbed.

I do not usually display my underwear on the internet but this is a special occasion.

I am enough of a realist not to buy the size 8, but only just. I can (with some difficulty) get the cami on. I need to lose 20 pounds or so to wear it comfortably. Once I'm small enough, I'll wear it incessantly and will probably go hiking in it.

I bought a sports bra too. This is not gorgeous or glamorous and although it zips up the front, putting it on is reminiscent of being swallowed by a boa constrictor. The zip has a little lapel under it, which I discovered (the hard way) needs to lie flat when you do the zip up as it is designed to stop you getting bits of your chest caught in the teeth of the zip. Ow.

This is probably all routine for the jocks and jockesses on here. For me, whole new vistas are opening up. It's like a journey of discovery and every day there's something new.

So what's next? I can't wait to find out!

It's great to read of your progress - well done!

And as for the M&S underwear - no wonder you bought it - it's beautiful! Definitely an inspiration and encouragement to keep losing the extra pounds. Perhaps I should buy some too....

I totally love your sense of humor! I wore my work out clothes to the fitness center last weekend and packed black jeans and top to change in after my shower. Well I bought several pairs of identical black jeans at a great sale price. (ones that fit now and ones that will fit later) Wrapped in the towel I get into my undies and shirt, socks and reach for the jeans, noticing that they don't look all that large. Hmmm no options but to try. I squeeze into them and have gapitis of inches. I have an audience watching now. emoticon Well I got those #@# fastened and survived my grandson's soccer game with them on. I am going to go through clothes and organize the sizes again. Next time they will fit nicely.

I loved this blog especially the mental image of the ferrets!

Congratulations on accomplishing your goal. I've found new clothes are a great motivator and reward. I go to all the thrift shops in town and buy "new" clothes (sometimes designer labels) for just a few dollars. Old baggy clothes make me feel sloppy and unattractive and make it easier to overeat (Can't do that as easily in the snug fitting goal clothes)

Anyway, keep up the great job!

This is the very first time I am posting something on Sparks People. I read the web site from time to time and am trying to get back on the wagon. I joined some years ago. Lost some weight and then gained it all back when I didn't maintain the life style changes.... an old story.

I wanted to tell you that I love reading your blogs. I can identify them by the wonderful, detailed, funny and uplifting way that you write (you are a pro). All I see is "featured members blog" in my email and I know immediately that it is you. Your blogs, descriptions of your walks, funny descriptions of your body (a mirror image of mine) bring me great delight. Thank you so much for adding smiles to my days. I'm cheering you on! You have inspired me to start looking after myself again :)
