SparkFriend HIKERBECKY taught me about a cool app for my android phone: MayMyFitness. I downloaded the app at the end of October and Oh My How Fun! I can log Dog walks, regular walks, runs, running or walking on treadmill, climbing stairs, biking, hiking, swimming, and many other fitness activities.
So far, I've mostly been using it for walks and dog walks, although I did map a hike, too. :D The app uses my smartphone's GPS system and measures my distance very accurately, to the hundredth of a mile.
It has a pause button, so if I stop at a traffic light to wait, I'm not miscalculating my actual activity minutes. Likewise, I can pause my hike if I stop to eat a snack or take photos.
I had been using SparkPeople's "Map Route," which works well... however it does not measure altitude change and doesn't work too well for hikes or off-road walks that don't have clearly delineated points on the map. MapMyFitness handles all those and gives me an accurate read on distance and time.
It's been quite fun to use this app and it actually encourages me to walk more! The other day, I thought it would be fun to walk to the chiropractor's office instead of driving. Since the office is less than a mile from where I work and the weather was lovely, I walked it! Ooooh fun! 0.91 miles each way, 19 minutes. (I wasn't trying to speedwalk, as I didn't want to get smelly in my office-wear!)
Walked to the hair stylist for a bangs trim. 0.36 miles and 8 minutes each way. Walked to the grocery store. 0.3 miles and 7 minutes each way.
Now, I'm finding myself thinking, "where can I walk next?" just so I can map it, get my times, and add them to my fitness tracker.
It even estimates my calorie-burn!
Happy Mapper could be my new sparkname. :D
