Five years ago I had become so obese and disabled I
could no longer get up the steps into my home. We talked of a ramp, and some remodeling, but in the end I wanted to sell and move into an apartment set up for handicap person.
Found the apartment I now live in. Sold most of my furniture, as it was too much for a small apartment.
Wanted to keep the living area open for we knew I would soon need an electric chair to get around in.
I moved in with a double chair and some tables, a wooden storage bench, wicket chest, both of those units can be used for storage. A few odds and ends.
Since my obesity had defined my life, I had became very much the recluse. I didn't go out much and didn't have people over.
This changed in 2010 when I embarked on my life changing journey to find myself and live the life of a normal person.
I looked at the sparse furnishing and realized I needed to decorate.
My son in law called up and asked if I wanted a couple chairs, saw them at a end of day yard sale, they wanted $50.00 for the pair. He offered $25. 00 for both,
I had two recliners. Those two chairs give me enough seating and I rearranged everything and I was more or less satisfied.
But lately had looking at sofas.. I love to stretch out and recliners just don't do it.
Some time in September,
I was headed to the gym one morning, when I went out side, saw furniture stacked up . Asked manager if it was going to thrift store. Found out it was headed to the dump. Seems a lady was moving out, she had bought a new Lazyboy recliner sofa for $2,800.00 , only to have her new Bulldog puppy chew the ends, so she was paying to have it dumped.
I looked it over, it was in lovely condition, all but a couple of chew area from little puppy teeth. But it had the arm covers and extra pieces of material., so it could be fixed. I am handy and I didn't have an sofa, Plus it was free.
April, the manager had her sons carry it over to my apartment and leave it under the stairs, I would get to it when I returned from gym.
I had to move all the furniture in the living room to make room for the sofa, it had to go on the long wall apposite the patio door.
The chest got moved to the hall.
Moved the wooden bench over to fill in that spot.
Moved the big double chair where the bench had been, next to
TV and patio door. Do you see Titan in his living room bed? I used to fill this chair completely.
I then moved the two recliners to the end wall where the big chair had been, Along with a small table.
That left the wall free for the sofa. And let me tell you Lazyboy makes some heavy well constructed furniture. Even though the backs came off and later had to be slide into place. Moving that sofa was a 2 person job. But I didn't have anyone to help me. Now I used to be real strong, but that was sometime ago. I know I workout, do circuit training. Lift weight, but still I wasn't sure I could move it.
I carried the backs in, that was a job in it's self. Then I pulled on the sofa, it wouldn't budge. .I pushed, it moved a little, so with pulling, pushing, using every ounce of strength arms, legs hips, butt, I got it in the front door. But stuck. , Had to push it into bathroom, in order to shut front door. Then pull out into the hall, around living room corner into living room. Then position it against the wall ..
I sat down. Sweat was running down my face. I had the A/C on, but you would never know it. Then I had to struggled to get the backs in place and locked into the slots.
Finally I was finished. here's the FREE sofa.
It's not special, but it's comfortable. I like the high back for I have a bad back and neck , so having the support is just what I wanted and need.
The color went with the rest of my odds and ends.
My living room is eclectic, but cosy, and definitely reflects my personality.
This is a picture of the $15.00 heavy wood desk I found to use as a desk/night stand for my bedroom. I had looked all over, almost ready to give up, found it at the Goodwill distribution center. I had my grandson help me loaded into my van and get it in the house. But that was back in fall of 2010. I had only lost 100 lbs at that time and had not built up my strength yet.
Now there is no stopping me. My friend says I can start a moving business if I ever get tired of what I do now. I know he was kidding, but sometimes we don't know what we are capable of doing till we try.
I did ponder getting help. Waiting till some one was free to assist me. Asking the managers sons for help. But I am impatient. I am also very independent and I just wanted to see if I could manage myself. I found out I could.
I have mentioned knitting scarves , hats, here are a few that I have been working on. The Fall colored one has received many compliments.
I am knitting and crocheting scarves, hats for most of my Xmas presents.
You all know I am the self proclaimed Queen of Thrifty Bargain shopping.
I went to Macy's on Saturday, got a NEW pair of Rampage riding boots , reg. $69.00. on sale for $49.00. But if you shopped before 1:00 would get 50% off.
So paid $24.99. I needed a flat heeled black boots. Just couldn't seem to find any at the thrift stores. Never in my size.
Value village was having a50% off sale for Veterans Day. Since I have a preferred card could pre shop on Sunday. I picked up some skinny Jordach jeans. A buckskin colored suede jacket. A rust fitted jacket, a nice cream, brown .black sweater from Dressbarn. Spent $17.00.
I saw a nice sherling vest, but it was too big, needed to be taken up in bust area.
I didn't buy, but thought about it after I got home.
Monday morning Titan and I went back to Value Village, I found the vest, and a nice new still had store tag , sweater tunic, type dress. will ware it with leggings.
or over jeans with boots. It has a cowl neckline and looks great on. I spent another 14.00.
I look at the clothes in my closet and am amazed that I have so many nice items and spent so little for them. But what amazes me even more is they are all size 8 and 10's and I look and feel like a million dollars.
I have came a long way from that picture of me taken at 335 on Dec. 24, 2009.
I look more like this these days.
