Considering becoming a personal trainer. Weighing my options.

Thursday, November 15, 2012

I'm looking at the ACE website where they have self-study material, the cheapest one being $500. Paying $500 for just study material and an exam voucher seems insane. Sure, I may learn the material just fine, but I don't think that it would be as helpful in real-life settings, you know? Another option is to take Principles of Personal Training and Personal Training II at SUCO (where I graduated from in May...I wanted to take these courses but they never fit in my schedule) but that means I have to pay per credit (8 credits total) plus pay for an exam voucher. They also offer a personal training minor, which of course would cost even more money, but having more classes under my belt would mean I'm learning more, which would help me do better on the exam, right? I have a lot to think about. I graduated in May with absolutely no debt, no loans to pay back thanks to scholarships and my parents and grandparents generosity. If I were to go back to school now, I'd be entirely on my own. So, friends, what would you do if you were in my shoes?

Go for it! Student loans are not the end of the world, especially if you're only paying for 8 credits. I'd take that option not only because you're likely to do better on the test, but because the hands-on classes would make you a better trainer.

I think if you really want it go for it. Seems like you are in a good position to make these decisions right now. If I was you I would try to job shadow and see what the actual work is really like. Sometimes things interest us and we want to learn as much as we can about it but if we see what the job is actually like it makes us see it differently. Either way I wish you the best ;-)
