I've Started Telling My Daughters I'm Beautiful

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

So, the title is misleading because I haven't. But...after reading this article this morning (which literally left me in shock, it was THAT good)...I am going to.

It's a quick, but powerful read and I honestly think it's essential reading for any mom of young girls that is working hard to take care of her body.

Honestly...I can't stop thinking about this. All I have to say in response is...WOW.

It's going to take some time to work through all the implications of this piece.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Wow! That was powerful...and oh so true.
A couple years ago I started to realize a bit of this for myself, and have made a game out of making myself realize I'm beautiful too. When ever my kids ask questions that don't really need an answer, I'll say something about "How cute I am." They've now started finishing each other's comments with, "Don't you wish you were as cute as mom." (Doesn't sound amusing in type, but we all get a giggle out of it at home) ;o)

YES!!! We all think that we just have to tell them that THEY are beautiful, but really, we need to tell them the truth... that WE ARE BEAUTIFUL!!

That was truly heavy. Not being one who ever cared how someone looked, even me, I still came through knowing what society says is "beautiful" as if it's written in stone somewhere.
Nice article, huh? How will we learn to say we're beautiful?

I really wonder about this in my more introspective moments. That article was wonderful and beautiful and poignant, but I just couldn't relate to it.

Still, raising children has to be just about the hardest thing in this world, never knowing if you're doing it right or wrong but just doing it to the best of your better angels. I have a hard time raising cats and don't even get me started about plants!

Have a great weekend and thanks so much for sharing!!

A friend of mine posted the link and a very similar personal response on Facebook. I'll have to sit down and read the article when I have time to digest the whole thing.

You are beautiful and you need to own it and share it with your daughters so they can also see the beauty in you and the beauty in themselves. Great article!

Beautiful write-up and it makes alot of sense. I wish that I had told my daughter that when she was growing up. I truly feel that when we start loving ourselves instead of hating, we will take better care of ourselves and therefore, we will be more healthy. You're lucky, that you can start telling your girls that you're beautiful now. And you are!

It's not our outward appearance that makes us beautiful....IT IS OUR INWARD APPEARANCE that makes us beautiful. God Bless YOU! Vic.

That was an awesome article and you know it is true our children see what we do and then they see the world the way we do and feel the same way. This is really good advice. Good luck on your journey I know you will get there one step at a time because we are all beautiful no matter what.

That's a WONDERFUL article and an excellent point. I don't have children yet, but of course I plan to teach living a healthy lifestyle to them, with plenty of exercise and healthy food and lots of love and body acceptance...but I will be sure to make a point of actually MODELING all those things, including thinking of myself as beautiful. I will remember this article, and hide my insecurities and criticisms of myself around my kids (and hopefully come to a point where I don't even HAVE those insecurities any more, but that might be hoping for too much!). Thank you for sharing.
