It's SAD

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

Did you know that the acronym for the Standard American Diet is SAD??

It does make me sad that there is so little good food readily available at local restaurants, in friend's homes, and events in our area. My son-in-law is only 31 years old and he looks quite fit. However, his blood pressure is up. Of course that could be related to stress, but I strongly suspect it is more closely correlated to the high sodium meals that he loves. Although he eats with me three meals a week, I don't think I've had much influence on him (or my daughter, but that's another blog).

Yep, it's ironic and it's SAD.

PS - First Half Marathon in 3.5 days! Counting down. Still excited!

yep, the American diet is just too SAD. It breaks my heart how people are addicted to the cheap junk foods. Many inter city kids don't even know what good food is. The whole food processing and marketing is awful. I just don't know what lies ahead for the state of the USA. More health care costs for sure.
Have a nice day Marsha....the big run is almost here!
You go girl! I will be thinking of you. Photos please!

I associate SAD with seasonal affective disorder -- hadn't heard it applied this way.

Love LINDA's comments: you are having a huge impact on your grandgirls, I'm sure.

And . . . you never know . . . your SIL and DD may be picking up more than you realize . . .

Belly dancing!!! Now that would be a real challenge for my somewhat repressed and stuffy personality!!

I am going to look at this from another perspective. It may be difficult, if not impossible to influence your adult loved one's eating choices, but you do have complete control of those precious children in your care. I can see their healthy choices and fit activities some day being an influence on their parents when they are finally back living with them. You have the opportunity here to shape young lives and get them on the straight and narrow path so that they will not have to go through the obesity rampart with today's sedentary kids. You can do this with full knowledge of how much of your life was wasted being obese and the huge difference of being fit and healthy has made to you. 3.5 days to a major test of your new found fitness levels.
I so wish I could be there to cheer you and ONEKIDSMOM on. That look of you two passing the finish line will be awesome to behold!!

Thanks for the SAD reminder. My diet isn't too far off of the standard, somewhat better with more fruit and vegetables, but not a whole lot better.

Have fun on your first half marathon.

It is SAD. The principal at my school just had a heart attack - he is 15 years younger than I am. What a wake-up call.
