I'm Back

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

Sandy hit hard ...but it's frustrating when ...once again only the same four structures in a complex of 12 buildings loses power because the condo management fails to take adequate steps to prune trees over power lines. And the same management offered little information or support to the 48 families affected, because when a business doesn't suffer any monetary loss... what do they care.
So with no power, no internet, no heat, no light, and no warm food...
when the temperature dropped, a lot of the older residents suffered.
The condo management posted a notice on available shelter from the police dept. on day 7 of the outage. Two days ago, the ambulance came for a cat lady who refused to go to a shelter and abandon her pets. Today the transformer and internet cable are still hanging down at ground level where everyone just ignores any precaution and walk over and under it , because there are no warning barriers.
The condo management comes by and mows the lawn and just keeps going.

Anyone see a problem here.

As for internet...before the storm I had almost all my bills posted to my email.
When you can access the internet and can't transfer funds to cover online billing...
emoticon you get STRESS.
and by the way... a little concept like GOING to the BANK and cancelling some online bill paying...isn't possible. You can't do that from the BANK.
emoticon STRESS.
And you begin to realize that MURPHY'S LAW
{Anything that can go wrong will go wrong...}
is very much the truth

Meanwhile...I didn't get much exercise when I was freezing, because I was too cold to move. I ate lots of sandwiches...
which totally undid my staying away from wheat ruined my low carb progress.

But ... I'm getting back on track
I got out the sewing machine today and altered 3 pants and 4 shirts to 2 sizes smaller. Now I'm strutting around in my new skinny jeans, feeling great and ready to pick up the pace again.

    Hi Sheryl,

My name is Leslie. I've sort of been following you for a little while, and I think we have a lot in common. I think we are about the same age, I am also tall (5'10"), and I grew up in Bergen County. I live in Essex County now but I spend a lot of time in Bergen because my mother still lives there.

I lost power for 5 days (from Mon. night - Saturday night) after the hurricane. I can totally relate to being too cold to exercise. That described me perfectly. Even now, with the power failure long behind us, I am having a hard time with it.

Yikes I think you set a record. I can remember when we were without power (and internet, kinda sorta) for 8 days due to ice storm. We have our own home and it has gas heat so the heater heated on (even though the blower could not kick on.)... and we had gas stove, so we could cook hot meals on the stove. The Pietro (sp?) automatic lighter had long ago ceased to work so we've been using Bic flame lighters (the long kind for starting charcoal fires etc.) for years, so it was no problem to get the stove lit. I remember our son was only like 7 or 8 at the time and he was worried that the microwave oven would not work and we wouldn't have a way to eat... so I told him about how gas worked fine and we could cook meals "the old fashioned way." We had our cell phones back then so I would go to the Library or McDonald's or other places to a) thaw out b) plug in for a recharge and c) check email!

And man, that bit of info about the online banking makes me think - maybe I should go back to writing checks and mailing them!? We truly are vulnerable!!

The storm has left so many people in bad shape. What a nightmare!

It sounds like your personal shape, though, is better - given that you are taking in those jeans!

That is terrible mismanagement for your apts. I assume that the city, state, and federal agencies are of no help. Can you complain to the renters' association and try for more help.

I would be eating sandwiches also in the cold and dark.
What a Murphy's law about the online payments. Surely they should cut the late charges because of the lack of power.

Hugs to you for holding on and staying strong. I am sorry you are undergoing such an awful fall out from the storm and from bureaucratic neglect.

Take care..glad you are feeling more on track.

I think that actually the power company is responsible for the trees near the power line... and of course for the repairs. BUT.. it seems like the managment could have done SOMETHING to be helpful..

And to all of us, a lesson... keep a hard copy of what you need to get into your accounts if you have to go somewhere else to use the internet. Keep it in a locked file drawer if you have one, or somewhere not near your computer, but have it available!

Also, there is a free but annoying service called mail to web that allows you to log into your email when you are not at your own computer and check it on the web. I have used it when our server at the office was down to get my mail directly from the web.

Sheryl, I am glad you have weathered all of this, and hope that you will have power and internet and HEAT!!! Hugs!

  Hi Sheryl........
I am very happy to see you back and still on track.
What can I say about your Condo Management?!?!? They didn't help with your NFH or during the other storm..........and you didn't get any satisfaction from the BBB last time either. It is hard to believe that they can get away with what they are when there are lives at stake. Maybe they need a lawsuit to wake them up. It seems the only thing that affects people like them!!!
Anyway...........take care.

Welcome back! Missed you, Skinny Butt! Obviously those icky sandwiches didn't do you any real harm. I wished I lived closer and could help you beat the stuffing out of the condo management. They need their butts kicked. I hope the old lady's pets are okay. I'm worried now. Darn these creeps!! Why don't they fix these problems. Its time to start an uprising, a protest against BIG BROTHER! Get your tie-dyed t-shirts, bell-bottoms, and peace jewelry out. It's been years but I still know the drill. LOL.

    Welcome back. You were missed!

I thought about you early (about 5 o'clock a.m.) on Sunday a week ago when we had a wind storm come through and blew some limbs down and hit our electric wires and took out our electricity. We called the power company and they were here in about 3 hours.
All I thought about was the people who were STILL suffering from Sandy.

Glad you're okay and wearing your skinny jeans. As for the other stuff--yikes! I never thought about what happens when you can't pay your bills online. Something to consider. Here the electric company prunes the trees near the electric line, although you really need to prune them before they butcher them. It's so frustrating that the condo management company isn't more responsible!
