These boots are made for walking

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Regular sparkfriends will be relieved to know that this evening I bought some walking boots.

I bought them online, so I haven't got them yet.

Listen, anticipation is all. I'm going to enjoy that edge-of-the-seat feeling till they arrive in about four days' time.

So, what internationally famous brand of hiking boots did I buy?

Clarks.

(Pause while everyone in the States looks blank, everyone in the Caribbean nods approvingly and everyone in the UK rolls about in hysterics.)

If the Brits have QUITE finished, I will explain.

Last week I actually bought a pair of hiking boots. I look them home and had a crisis of conscience. They had cost 125, which would have made them the second most expensive footwear I'd ever bought (my red shoes were 145 but that's red shoes for you). I took the hiking boots back to the shop next day. Shops that sell hiking boots are quite used to this sort of thing because people take them home and wear them around the house for an evening to see how they feel.

They were nice-looking boots and a big name boot brand. But I thought realistically, what sort of hiking am I doing? I'm doing the sort of hiking an obese middle-aged woman does, in other words I'm not running up three peaks in a day, nor am I getting into parkour. I will never walk more than 20 miles in a day, and I'm only up to about 10 at the moment. I voted with my feet and the boots went back.

So . . . this morning I went online and had a nosey round. I know my level, I know my pocket, I had a look at the Clarks website. Clarks is an interesting phenomenon. Until a few years back it was the sort of shop where your grandma bought crossover sandals to hide her bunions, hence the hilarity from the Brits.

Then this song came out:

ORi4xwSwWlM

And suddenly they're hip.

To be fair Clarks have got loads of nice shoes in now.

But, but, Clarks is not the sort of shop you'd normally buy hiking boots in. It is popular with me because I am broke and it is cheap and I know my place. What's more, I ordered my boots online and got 20 per cent off too. Instead of paying 125 for a big name brand, I'm paying 71 for boots that will do what I need.

I'm on my toes in anticipation.

And I've saved 54 whole quid to spend on a sports bra and smaller trousers.

Yes, good athletic shoes, can be expensive. And buying them online can be a better deal because of no store, and less staff.

I like to try them on at the store, to see what fits best, and often you can get them at one of those discount brand label named stores, or online.

We have Clark's in Canada too. My very favourite casual slides are Clark's. I say good call on the exchange. I have often spent more money on a really good sports bra than I have paid for shoes. (I haunt bargain bins) Also, I believe the new trousers are essential. I don't want you blogging from jail (gaol) cause you dropped your pants in the Epping Forest. lol

Getting into shape and being healthy can be expensive if we buy the best of the best even when we are just building up our abilities to be more active. You did the right thing by taking those expensive hiking boots back and buying something more reasonably priced that fit your current needs better. If you need better boots later you can always get them.

As usual, I can't understand a word in the video. But I DO think the shoes look very comfy. I might even have a pair in the closet. Could that be possible?

Clarks are actually pretty popular in the US. I like them because the shoes are well made, comfortable and come in wide widths. It's true, they are not terribly fashionable but I would rather have comfy feet above all else. My choice for hiking boots is Merrell. I didn't even know Clarks made hiking boots! emoticon

Sounds like the best choice for you! I have to admit, I wear athletic shoes to hike and always have and have never owned a pair of hiking boots. I do have the old lady bunions so I have to try them on and walk around and make sure I can wear them for a while. Then when I find a brand and style I like I buy online because I can find them cheaper. Like you I have a tight budget. Hope they give you many many miles of wonderful exploring!

I've been aware of Clarks for some time - even bought a pair of the ladies' Clog style Clarks, fairly nice. I'm not as familiar with the "chukka" style boots by Clarks featured in your video (had never seen it and couldn't understand a word they said!). Are you boots like those in the video?? will they be sturdy enough for 10 miles??

One of my favorite pair years ago was a Rocksport brand with Gore-Tex water resist fabric - they didn't go up over the ankle, more like an overgrown sneaker. But my, they were perfect for mucking about on walks and not worrying about encountering a puddle of water! One time, I undexpectedly hit a puddle of water that went up and over the top of my bootie, and I was bracing to have the feeling of wetness soaking through. I felt the temperature drop inside as the water was cold (was walking and playing with my younger brother in the winter time when I had gotten these boots.), but lo! and behold! my feet were DRY! Was really surprised!! (And I got them on sale quite a bit of discount as they were clearanced out. I love buying expensive shoes on sale cheap!!).

So good on you for getting a nice pair of Clarks and you'll have to take photo of them on your next walkabout??

    Cheers!

    I love Clark's shoes they are well made and reasonably priced... good quality materials are used too I have been where you are regarding paying a high price for foot wear I was looking for comfortable sandals for a trip to Mexico that I knew would involve a lot of walking I bought a pair of Easy Spirit and I have to say they are the only brand besides Clark's that I was able to wear without breaking them in.. but it did not stop me bitching about the high price {i still have them}

My first encounter with Clark's were when my foot doctor prescribed the clogs for my plantar fasciitis. They didn't have the better styles back then. Times have changed, and they are still a great product for the feet. Congrats on the new boots!! And always congrats on saving money!

clarks are classic! I don't own any but understand being frugal. I bought my hiking boots years ago on clearance at a local sports store. I haven't worn them much and thought about donating them several times but now thinking I may keep them b/c the kids are getting old enough where we can go hiking soon :)
    Enjoy!!

emoticon I'm all about practicality and comfort. I also am a big fan of saving money. Why spend more than you have to? Most of the time you're just paying for the name and not necesarily the quality. Enjoy! emoticon

Clark's have changed a lot since the old days. I just bought a pair and they are styling! Cute and functional can't beat that combo. Enjoy yours as much as I enjoyed that cool, funky, Clarks song! I am finally cool and took only 60 years to get there! emoticon

Clarks make very comfortable shoes, albeit not in styles a teenager would wear. Then who wants to wear what most teenagers wear anyway! I find many teens (as I was back in the day) are so concerned about image they forget about function and comfort. Go for comfort, function and price and if they look good to boot (he,he) then you've got a great deal!

I have such a hard time finding footwear that fits properly that I am amazed that people can shop on line for shoes. I am jealous. And, I know about Clark's. they sell them in Canada and they are a very good company. I am sure you will be very happy and comfy!!!!

I don' know Clarks, but if they are for "older" people, then I like it.
I'm with you, not all things that are expensive are good. I also buy what
I need for what I am going to do. Enjoy your new hiking boots, and
    "hike on". emoticon

Clarks may have a style fit for older people (me, and those who won't admit it), but they are very foot friendly and last. You do get more bang for your buck.

Anyone's who's in touch with being laughed at by the Brits and utterly baffled by the Americans is good in my books. (This from an American who started as a Brit but transformed by way of a Canadian interlude.).
