When we decided to give gardening another go, We drooled over seed catalogs and put great thought into what we wanted to grow and where it should be planted. This was going to be the year that we became more self sufficient, and ate healthier home grown foods and gave new types of veggies a try. Last spring our container gardens were carefully planned, planted with care, fed, watered and weeded. We even moved them about to provide more sun or less depending on the month.
We planted oriental yellow cukes because the ad said that they contained protein. They bloomed but never produced. The zuchinni did ok, and then the heat of our Arizona summers kicked in and fried them to a crisp along with a whole list of other veggies. Our heirloom tomatoes put out amazing blooms, but never any fruit. I ended up cutting them back, with the hopes the cooler weather would bring about fruit. We did enjoy the yellow plum tomatoes for quite a while, but even they could not bear fruit in the august heat.
The one plant that just kept right on flowering and fruiting was the one that neither of us really ended up liking; the miniture egg plants. Lucky me, I just picked 10 more egg plants from it. Another round a Baba Ganouch anyone?
Back in October we replanted the yellow tomatoes, regular cukes, and cut back the heirloom tomatoes. To my surprize I just found a heirloom tomato the size of a baby's fist and could not be more excited. The yellow plum tomatoes are producing, but the cukes put out vines and flowered, but quickly yellowed and whithered. No idea why.
My dreams of growing all of our veggies has flown out of the window, but I will continue to grow the ones we had luck with and try some new ones here and there.
