Know anything about low blood sugar?

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

October 5th work had a biometric screening. I passed everything with flying colors. Yippee.

Low blood sugar.

I had fasted a full 12 hours & my blood sugar was 60. The woman said for anything lower than 70 she needed to recommend I have it checked. I of course have not had it checked.

I suppose I could go to the 24 hour medclinic place here near by and have it checked again.

Just wondered if you had any insight. We all know...

One of my younger sisters has low sugar. She keeps peanut butter crackers for a quick fix when she's feeling shaky. It's very portable if you carry a purse or brief case.

Hope it was just one of those things due to fasting.

I have definitely had the shakes all my life. I used to be real thin when I was much younger. It has only been over last week that I was a bit dizzy when I was sick. I will get it checked at some point I suppose.

I appreciate your comments. Thank you.

If you have never experienced problems with it before then it might have been a fluke. Have you ever experienced shaking, headaches or other unexplained symptoms when you may have gone longer than normal between meals? My hubby gets low blood sugar easily if he doesn't eat right on schedule. Nothing medically needs to be done for his condition, he just has to maintain a good eating schedule. Getting it checked again would probably be a good idea but it doesn't sound like even the lady there thought it was a super big deal.

I had a low reading once, took it again and was fine. Could be anything even that the lab technician did something.

12 hours is a long fast period. I would get checked out but don't panic about it unless it happens more often.

Are you having symptoms? Shakiness, dizzy, etc (check online for what to watch for). You may have dipped without a problem (some labs say we should be 65-100 for fasting, some have different ranges). Normally, we have glycogen and other balancing hormones to keep us in a normal range.

If you have any symptoms of low blood sugar, eat or drink some fast glucose (juice, small bit of candy), then a more complex source of carbs & protein (turkey sandwich, peanut butter on crackers, etc) The juice or candy gives you a fast sugar boost, the complex sustains it.

Good luck - hope it's just a minor variation.
