Yesterday I Finally Learned how to Tie my Shoes

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

Still on the lookout for the perfect pair of hiking boots, yesterday I set out to find them, the boots with the widest toe box. I was on a mission. I googled, searched, read, compared and when I had zeroed in I went to REI.

Decided on the Keen Targhee II Mid.
I am so excited, can't wait to hike them on Saturday! It will be a smaller, 9-mile hike, which will be the perfect distance to try them out.

And while at REI I learned that it actually matters how you lace your shoes. They showed me a technique I can use to lock my heel in place more securely. Now, I'm not sure, I might be the only one out there who did not know this and you're all thinking "duh", but hey, better late than never.

Did some more internet research about that, too, and found this nifty little video.

    Oh that video is fascinating!

Hey, I just bought new Keens at REI too. Maybe even the same ones. I love mine.

HOW have I missed your blogs? I learned some of these techniques from the woman at the outdoor store who spent nearly an hour with me trying to find the right boots. However, I can't wear boots because of screws in my ankle -- they inevitably are rubbed by the boots and cause a lot of pain. So it's shoes for me!

KEEN doesn't work for me because I have a narrow heel. The Scarpas are great and even though I took back the Vasque boots, I ordered Vasque shoes online. (They don't carry them in our stores.) I really envy you your REI!!!!

REI is a dangerous place for me. I can always find something there I did not know I needed! Footwear is critical to any outdoor activity. Nice boots. Thanks for the link to the video.

Congrats on your new boots - hope they work great for you! I've had trouble finding Keens that fit but I also know that we all have such different needs, there isn't one single boot or shoe that works for everyone! I'm glad to see the video, too - I knew the 'ankle hold' technique for walking shoes but it never occurred to me that I could do it with boots and the hooks so glad to find out - maybe this will help me deal with some of the many foot problems I have!

Happy trails!

If REI doesn't have it, it's not made. I love that store. And Duh, thanks for posting the link, because I didn't know it made a difference either.

I learned this trick when I started at Lady Footlocker so many years ago but had forgotten how to do it. Thanks for sharing this tip with us. I will be using this tip every day when I tie up my walking shoes. Hugs
Let us know how the new hikers are.

I didn't know that, but it makes sense that different sized/shaped feet would require different ways to secure them in shoes. I hope your new boots are exactly what you wanted!
