"All life demands struggle. Those who have everything given to them become lazy, selfish, and insensitive to the real values of life. The very striving and hard work that we so constantly try to avoid is the major building block in the person we are today."

~Pope Paul VI

Having to struggle raises awareness - which to my mind then raises appreciation for what we have.

We do tend to value what we earn. I noticed how much better my children took care of the bikes they paid for themselves than the ones they were given.
Butterflies that are helped out of their cocoon and chicks that are helped out of their eggs often don't survive. They needed that struggle to get strong enough to live.

I've often tried to explain this to my Mum when she feels bad about not buying me and siblings whatever we wanted whenever we asked for it. Now, thanks to her, I know the value of money and that owning 'things' isn't the be-all and end-all.

So very true! You can tell by the mentality that has encompassed our society. Gimme, gimme, gimme! My parents always told me, anything worth having is worth working for. I am still working and hope to be able to until Iam called home.
