Dealing with People Who Deplete Us

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

I found a quote this morning that helped me with my worrying about someone else's drama and am sharing it here. I know we all get caught up in other's stuff from time to time. This is from Martha Beck:

"When we force ourselves to connect against our heart's desires, we create false, resentful relationships; when we disconnect from the people who deplete us, we set them free to find their tribes while we find ours."

Thanks for posting. This has made me feel better about a decision to let a former friend go. She needs something from me that I can't give her. Hopefully, she can find a good tribe to get what she needs. It's unrealistic from me and my life. She made me and several others feel bad for not being able to satisfy her.

I got over those types of feelings of needing others a while back. When you find your correct tribe, you will know it.

Thanks again!

That reminds me of the book called "BOUNDARIES" by Henry Cloud and John Townsend. Not only do we need to know our boundaries (what is our stuff) but we need to know what isn't our stuff and someone else's

Having them go find their own tribe might be a polite way of saying... take your "stuff" away. emoticon

I grew up not having good defined Boundaries and often would try to rescue others from their difficulties, but they didn't learn and I would get worn out.

We can pray for these people and direct them to resources-- so our personal resource is not consumed.

Loved the quote, thanks!

Yep! Learning healthy boundaries has changed my life - and theirs - for the better. I'm all about setting people free to discover and be who they really are, and that can't happen if they're trying to draw from me. Each person is a unique blessing in this world.

I have this posted above my computer (not mine, found it on a sparkpage awhile back). Life is short. Don't waste it with negative people who don't appreciate you. Keep them in your heart, but keep them out of your life.

Thank you. I had a friend who drove me crazy with all her drama's all the time and I have finally told her not to call me any more and have blocked her number from my phone. I feel so relieved not listening to her all the time. She does it to others too. Soon she won't have anyone to talk to because she is alienating people.

Words to live by, especially heading into the holiday season when I have to endure some family members that definitely deplete me. I will think of your quote and "This too shall pass" next week when I find myself dealing with my sister in law.

Thanks for sharing this !

You are so right! I've done this a few times and never once regretted it. Unfortunately cannot do it with people to whom I'm related by marriage.
