Trying to Spark while trying to finish my PhD dissertation

Monday, November 12, 2012

On Oct 5, my dissertation proposal was (finally) approved!

On Oct 12, my pilot study (required by the university) was completed.

On Oct 28, my final survey went public.

After about two and a half weeks of data collection, I received 51 usable surveys, and closed my data collection effort.

Finally, on 12 Nov 2012, I have completed all my initial data analysis and am starting to write my final two chapters.

All the while, I'm trying to exercise (which I haven't done very much) and eat right. Both of these have been challenging, especially since my entire focus has been on getting my dissertation finalized.

But after almost 5 years and 9 months, as you can well guess, I really, really, REALLY want to get this behind me. So I'm sure I can be forgiven a little if my lazer-like focus on finishing my dissertation gets me a little behind on my exercise schedule.

In anticipation of finally being done with my PhD this winter, I bought a season pass to a local ski area. I guess I'll just have to make up the lost exercise time on the slopes :-)

Onward!

Once done with the dissertation ... much more time for exercising.

Good luck. Producing a dissertation is a great accomplishment and the start of a rewarding career. During my PhD studies was when I started my long decline in fitness and developed bad eating habits. Sounds like you have kept to a good health and fitness plan so a few weeks of shifted focus is well deserved.

Dave, good on ya for focusing on the dissertation. When I was working on my master's thesis, I'd do *anything*, not to sit down to the data analysis (I did qualitative research--too damn much analysis!!!!) and then to the writing. Not sure why, because I really like writing and crafting a good piece. Maybe it was the fear of finally finishing. Anyway, you're wise enough to do the Right Thing here : )

I can certainly understand why you want it behind you. That's a major accomplishment! Good luck with the project. The ski present to yourself sounds like a great reward and one that includes exercise in fun!

You're totally forgiven. However, knock out "20" for every day you don't exercise.

Just remember to take some breaks from the writing. You can do your thinking while you are walking or riding. Exercise helps your mental processes. And way to go on your progress. This is a major hurdle but it will soon be behind you.

Congrats on your dissertation progress! Each one of those moments is a huge milestone, and it sure sounds like you are near the end. How smart to have a reward waiting for you when it is all done.

Great work! Just know that the exercise is still waiting for you when you have a bad day, are staring at a blank screen, or need a stress break.
