The Ick Feeling...

It's just about Monday again, new week means new attitude. It also means it's time for another running goal for me. I've picked my next 5k to run on December 9th. Now that my calf is healed (cross fingers it stays that way) I will be able to start training more properly than I was able to last time. I started yesterday with a 5k virtual challenge run and it went pretty good.

I've learned a lot about working on my running base, tempo runs, form and keeping an eye on the ground to make sure I don't eat the pavement again ;) Main thing I'm learning is how to go about pushing my body past its normal limit without #1: injuring myself again (so notorious for pushing it beyond its capabilities and ending up injured...you'd think I'd learn this one by now) and #2: finding the desire to push myself through that ick feeling I have at the end of mile 2. I've always hated the feeling I get at that point and I normally slow it down til it diminishes, but that seems to be my downfall because I don't feel any progression in my endurance. I was told by a fellow sparker, who happens to be training for a half, that a 2 mile run for her is almost a waste of training time because it takes her those 2 miles to finally get into a good groove and the miles after that are the ones that she enjoys the most. Hmmmmm....

So taking that thought out to the road with me the other day, I pushed through that 2nd mile and kept it up as best I could through the ick feeling. I did slow it down just a bit, but for no longer than 30 seconds at a time and only twice, and the 3rd mile was indeed the most enjoyable one.

Due to my injuries in the past month and a half, I'm dealing with a lot of babying and extra attention to any type of odd feeling in my calf, but it seems to be taming me a bit. You're not supposed to add more than 10% a week to your runs, which is a rule I never was abiding by. Now it's my bigtime rule. It will take some time for me to let go of the fear of feeling that awful pop in my calf again, but this is my sport that I love and unfortunately the pop can happen, but as a perk the pop also allowed me to find tons of new information, techniques and great insight from others who have experienced the same thing and were willing to share their knowledge with me.

So off to a new goal, hoping for a better time that is closer to my goal of a sub 25 run. At the awards ceremony after my last 5k, both my daughter and I sat in awe as we watched a truly amazing 62 year old win first place in her age group for running the race in 22 minutes. That, to me, is amazing.

    Ididn't know about the two mile thing. I was never a runner and I started training this fall and did the spark people virtual 5K.

I plan on ruining more and trying to improve on my time, your blog was a great eye opener for me. Thanks for posting and good luck with your new goals!

    I just recently blogged about the two mile thing!
It always takes me 2 miles to get into a groove.
The first few minutes of a run, my body and I are all happy that we are running and then my body realizes that we are not stopping. From about 1/2 mile to about 1 1/2 miles...it sucks. Yup, that one mile totally sucks.
After two miles things start to fall into place. You find that groove.
Something you may want to try that helped me out a lot, was to take a 1 minute muscle recovery walk after each mile. Run a mile, at whatever pace is comfortable then walk for 1 minute. Run another mile, walk another minute. You would be surprised how much it helps and it doesn't affect your time much. It is enough of a recovery to be able to run stronger.
