Some simple substitutions for cooking ingredients
It is easy to modify some of your favorite recipes by using the substitutions listed below--no one will even notice the difference!
Instead of... Try...
1/2 cup oil - 1/4 cup applesauce + 1/4 cup canola oil or butter
1 egg - 1/4 flax, vinegar or lemon juice
1 cup chocolate chips - 1/2 cup chocolate chips, chopped dried fruit, or nuts
Frosting - Sliced fresh fruit with dusting of powdered sugar
Sour cream - pureed cottage cheese or plain yogurt
Whole milk - evaporated milk
Sugar - Artificial sweetener for some or all (follow manufacturer's directions); 1/4 to 1/2 less sugar in the recipe
