My First Half!
Saturday, November 10, 2012
Don't really know where to begin! My daughter and I decided way back in June that it would be great to do a "big" race together & both signed up for the Raleigh marathon & half marathon. She is a grad student at NC state & my one son and his wife also live down there! So not only would this be my first half and her first full we (husband & I ) would be flying down for a great family week-end! (Just couldn't do the 9+ hour car ride home!)
We followed Jeff GAlloway training guide; for me it was 17 weeks and Ellen was closer to 23. I also did the run/walk method. So as the summer days came & went we did our weekly training calling or texting each other for encouragement! The training gradually added mileage every week or so with my longest run doing 14 miles! I know some of you guys reading this can't even imagine doing 14 miles I couldn't either but did it! Anything is possible& I have learned that running is not only getting your body ready but also your mind!!
So fast forward to the race week-end! We flew out of Pittsburgh airport which was exciting since we had not been in a plane for over 11 years!! Quick flight down and we were greeted by my son & daughter at the airport to be shuttled back to his place!!
Saturday morning we went out to breakfast & the expo! Pretty cool and a great place to pump you up for the next morning!
I didn't sleep very well~which I have read is pretty normal and woke up to rain early (4:30)!
Ate my regular breakfast & we were off about 5:45 to get to the race.
Parking and then getting to the starting line was surreal for me since I never in a million years thought I would do a half~Who me I'm always the cheerleader at the side of the road! Gave my daughter a quick hug and then off to find my place toward the back!
It started right at 7:00 with all 4,000 runners starting at the same time. I must say it went well until about mile 7-8. My hamstring was really bothering me and had to walk more that I would have liked! Guess I would have to say miles 8-10 were probably the worst then I got my second wind and decided I needed to pick up the pace even just a little! i felt better as I approached the 11 mile mark and then knew I only had roughly less than 30 minutes ! Funny the tricks you can play on your mind to get through the tough parts!! I finished in 3hrs20 minutes;slower than I was hoping for but my main goal was to finish & I did!! After my cool down walk and snack we waited for my daughter.
I am happy to report she finished as well! So proud of her! What a great day for mother & daughter!!
Want to thank everyone for their support and cheering me on through this!!
