Remembering, reminding and rebooting.

Thursday, November 08, 2012

I've been finding myself in need of three things lately:

Remembering-as in, needing to remember why it is I want to eat kale over cookies, exercise over sleeping in, drink water over soda/juice, etc.

Reminding-as in, needing to remind myself that just because I slip up and fall off track one day, it does not give me license to just continue on the same self-destructive path until a fresh new month comes along, and that that attitude/strategy has never worked for me before

Rebooting-as in, needing to reboot not just my eating and exercise program, but my way of thinking these days

I need to reset whatever switches I've recently triggered because they are not helping me reach my goal of health, but they are in fact rather detrimental to my overall wellbeing. At least I'm aware of this and am not waiting until December 1st to be better, right?!

Don't wait. Reboot now. If you look at it as a life plan, rather than a diet, all of this is just a series of back-to-back reboots. Every day we learn something new and adjust accordingly, but that can't be done if we don't make mistakes. I'm always making mental notes of serving sizes, better foods over less healthy ones, carb choices, bad exercise decisions that leave me limping and wishing I didn't jump into everything so wholeheartedly all the time. We aren't perfect - so waiting until later for perfection only delays the process. You are right about doing this now. Accept the mistakes as part of the lessons. Reminding and remembering are so essential at this stage. You are on the right path. You can do this. emoticon

It must be seasonal, because I'm struggling to get back into routine too!

I favor the Do A Little strategy. Don't feel like getting up an hour early? Get up 10 minutes early & do some stretches. Which may turn into a few pushups while I'm down here, and then the next day it's easier to get up 30 minutes earlier, etc.

Want to eat that cookie? Okay, break it in half, take the half and a glass of water and go sit down. Eat half cookie. Drink water. Track half cookie. Contemplate if still desire Other Half cookie. (usually I can do no at that point.)

I use this most for washing dishes. I never want to cook dinner when the sink & counter are full of dirty dishes (my kitchen is tiny. TINY!!!), even when the thought of takeout makes me want to scream and dangle out the window by my ankles. So I tell myself I'll wash ONE bowl and ONE pan. And usually once I start I wash everything except maybe a couple tupperwares and the silverware (SWEET BABY JESUS HOW I HATE WASHING SILVERWARE). It's weird but it works.

You will be happier if you "reboot" now than if you wait until January 1. It's not easy to always eat right, but it really is worth it and so are you!
