I was very proud of myself yesterday. I made a plan on Sunday night with a friend to meet her at the gym after work Monday evening and I stuck to it. Simple enough you may think - but to me, HUGE! First off, I've been doing mostly walking lately. But, with it becoming dark out by 5pm now, I'm not finding the time during the week to do that. I get really run down during the work day and would've loved nothing more than to cancel the gym plans, grab some dinner, and veg out on the couch with my sweats on. But, I didn't. What we planned to be about a 30 minute-45 minute cardio session turned into 30 minutes of fast-paced walking on the treadmill while talking and laughing with each other...between breaths! Then, we decided we had a bit more in us and headed over to the stationary bikes for another 30 minutes....of which we planned to survive about 10 minutes of. It really was a lot of fun having someone to talk to during the whole thing & made the time literally fly right by!
Unfortunately, the rest of my evening wasn't quite as pleasant as my workout had been. I finished my dinner and was enjoying a bit of tv, and honestly nodding off here and there, when my next door neighbor called at 8:30pm. She was FRANTIC. I've never heard her like this before! She was asking if my dad had just been knocking on her door. After explaining that he's away on a business trip she asked if my brother had been. My brother actually was out as well, mom's at work, I was home alone. Then she starts screaming saying that someone's trying to get in her back door! So, I run to my back window to try to see anything...pitch black...but her motion lights were on. I grabbed a jacket and threw some shoes on and went over (all the while REALLY wishing I had a gun!), staying on the phone with her of course. We checked out back and there wasn't anyone there...but we didn't open the door b/c we were too scared. On my way over, the neighbor across the way called out to me asking if someone was trying to break in, I tell her yes, and she said she saw them run from the backyard and go tearing down the street toward the school. Thankfully, she was already on the phone with the police.
The county police come (3 or 4 patrol cars of them!), scour the block and find no one. They then ask to bring their K9 through. So, the dog comes through the house, goes out back and finds a really strong scent, follows it right down the street, down the path to the school, and right down a path there toward another neighborhood, then losing it. The police dusted for prints, found none. Also found that they had used one of her garden stepping stones to break the basement window! Luckily, she has bars on the windows so they still couldn't get in.
We talked with the police for a while and they said that all sorts of calls similar to this were coming in lately. Some robbers successful, others not so much. But, all the cases were the same - they ring the doorbell and knock to see if anyone's home (usually a house without any lights on outside or visible inside). If no one answers, they go around back and break-in from there. They've been happening in a lot of the neighborhoods around us, would've been nice for us to know as citizens I think, but at least we do know now. Luckily, no one was hurt! The officer's advice was to make sure you leave lights on so it looks like someone is home, even if you're not. Set timers if necessary.
Stay safe Spark friends!
