Almost 44,000 less home students applied to study at UK universities for 2012 entry than did for 2011 entry,. Why is that? Recession? Increase in tuition fee? Obtaining a Uni degree is now less valued for?

    I can only speak for the US schools, and Florida universities at that, but our tuition rates are going up, up, up and a lot of students are finding that the kind of job you can get here with a non-specialized bachelor's degree (not engineering, nursing, accounting, or a degree needed for a specific job) or a degree outside of the STEM fields will not earn enough money to pay off the resultant student debt.

A friend of mine has over $40,000 in student debt, earned a psychology degree from a private school, and is waiting tables in our hometown.
