My first blood donation...

Sunday, November 04, 2012

So, I signed up for this Friday at 12:40 to donate blood.
I'm kind of scared.
And I have to eat tons of iron, because I don't usually xD
I'm vegan, is there any inexpensive iron rich foods to buy?

Has anyone gave blood before?
Does it hurt? emoticon

Red beets are a good source of iron. Be careful not to drink tea the day before or the day of donation. I've learned that when I do, I can't donate blood because my blood count is too low. Apparently, the tannins in the tea negatively affect how the human body absorbs iron. Since I have a tendency to feel lightheaded about an hour after donating blood, I drink orange juice as soon as possible afterwards (one serving is enough for me).

I feel the needle going in but it's well worth it. You'll be helping out other people that need the blood. I've been told by one of the nurses where I donate that the blood typically gets separated into components (usually red cells, platelets, and plasma). She said this is done so each unit of blood can help multiple patients.

Don't forget to drink plenty of water the day of donation. You may be advised to drink extra fluids for 24 hours following donation.

Unless you are iron deficient, you do not have to "iron load" before giving blood. You should be fine.

COngrats on your first donation.

This has also been my goal to donate blood before the end of the year!

Way to go! It shouldn't hurt, so no worries :)

You can purchase iron in the drug stores to take as a supplement either in a multi vitamin or straight iron. If you are vegan, you might be wanting to take them every day

google foods with iron and it will bring up a list for you to work with
