Great weather = a great run

Sunday, November 04, 2012

This was not an easy run, but I really enjoyed it because the temps have dropped a bit, here in Miami. Yesterday I ran a 12 miler with the local running store. The morning temps were in the high 50's to low 60's. This is perfect running weather.

It was still dark when we hit the turnpike trail ( about 6:35) and the traffic on the streets was very little. I had a 12 miler planned and my running partner had a 14 miler to do. My city, Doral is growing by the minute and it is refreshing to see how the city is adding bike paths and more parks as a way to keep the city residents active in a safe way. The turnpike trail is a paved path that is going to extend twenty five miles along the turnpike. Yes, a place to get in some serious exercise whether I decide to run, ride my bike or rollerblade. One of the new parks is a dog park; two separate gated areas (one for smaller dogs and the other for dogs over 25 lbs). There is also a small playground area, a couple of areas with tables, a path, with lines, for people to walk around or ride bikes, and outdoor exercise equipment. There is an elliptical machine, chair you sit on and use your feet to lift your weight and another sit down thingee that you use your weight to move the machine. It looks like a sit down see saw and you push with your legs to move it. Wow, how awesome.

So getting back to my run, I ran past this park, in the dark, and had to wait until I doubled back to see it. The first nine miles went by with no problems. The last 5k was a struggle. I was glad my running partner was there to keep my feet moving forward. I was a little mad at myself for forgetting two things for my run, but I thought I cannot do anything about so I just ran. I forgot my visor, and I forgot to bring an extra gel. I like to take a gel at miles 4, 7, and 10. I changed it to miles 5 and 10. I don't attribute being one gel short to my struggle on my last 3 miles. I was pacing a little faster this run compared to last week's long a minute. While I was not out of breath at the end of my run, my quads were a little sore. I have three easy runs before my half next Sunday. Since there is no school on Tuesday, (some of the schools are use as polling sites), I need to shift that run to Monday.

I am not expecting to PR at this half since I took time off during the summer, but I am ready to do it!! Fort Lauderdale 13.1 here I come. I am psyched for this race for another reason; I am going to meet up with another Miami sparker!!! It is so nice to meet someone you chat with online and put a face to the name.

Have a great week!

Daphne, you are READY for the half! That's this weekend, right?! I will be out of town but you will be in my thoughts! Looking forward to reading your race report!

And that's cool news about the turnpike trail and the free gym in the park!

Hey, you did 12 miles! That's what counts. Nice that weather cooperated, though. You'll do great next week at your half!!

Oh, and that park sounds so nice. I wish we had running/walking/biking paths near where I live. I just have streets. UGH!

Is there anything better than a "good" run? Not much.

Best of luck on your HM.

Sounds like your town is doing things right. A 25 mile path? Outstanding.
