Hambletonian Marathon Fun Run - NYC Marathon Alternative

Saturday, November 03, 2012

FWIW - I think Bloomberg canceling the NYC Marathon was the wrong decision, but what's done is done.

BUT - if you are trained and ready and in the area, drive about 1+ hour north to Goshen NY and try out the Hambletonian Marathon course. This event is scheduled to start in 2013, so its completely unofficial, and there will be some, but not full race support - but its a marathon course. And there is no charge.

NYC was expecting $350 Million in economic impact from the race. If we can can get a few extra dollars into *our* local economy, this post was worth it.

I think the only error here was in cancelling the marathon so late. I think the police and other first responders have a few higher priorities right now. Waiting 'till the last minute like that was a pretty lousy thing to do to everyone.
I understand the economic impact the race has on the community, and the fact that this is something people train all year for. But running past areas that are so utterly devastated seems a bit inappropriate, plus the drain on the already dwindling resources would have been brutal. Heck, they are still rationing gas in north Jersey, and traffic in and out of the city is a nightmare with so much mass transit still down.

I think NYC was in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. I do hope some of the runners hear about your track. That could be fun.

I didn't know that the NYC Marathon was cancelled....What a shame! You'd think they'd try to reschedule it....but I guess with all the craziness in NYC at the moment, it's probably the last thing on their minds.

It's great that Goshen is providing a free alternative, and linking it to donating to relief groups is an excellent idea. I hope you get a good turn out!

  Thanks for your Optimism.

We're also asking runners and volunteers who come out to consider making a donation of some kind to the many worthy relief agencies working in the affected areas. Perhaps a $26.20 donation to the Red Cross. Or food/water for a group in New Paltz who will be delivering aid next week.
