I had my first session yesterday and things went really well. My current schedule with my trainer is 3x per week for the next 4 months. I had to make a decision with what I was going to do. At first I was going to do a Crossft style group workout at another facility but after checking out training options I opted for a personal trainer instead. The guy has some serious credentials, a very good disposition, and he takes me seriously. We hit it off right away. He reminds me of a good friend I haven't seen or talked to in about 15 years, same personality.

I did my fitness assessment and did fairly well for someone who has been training on his own for a year and a half. VO2 Max was about a 35, which is about average for my age..

It's gonna be interesting to see how it reads after 4 months of dedicated training.

I felt like I was received well at the gym plus the owner was a trainer at the gym where I got my start so she knows my story pretty well and was overjoyed to have me on board...even got a big hug to boot :)

I guess when you condense all of the reasons why I selected the more expensive path, it all boils down to this..

I'm lonely.

I have been doing so much on my own for so long, I just need someone to work with, to push me, and to kick my rear when needed. I've done a really good job on my own for sure but it's time now to bring in outside help.

I need to be accountable to make it to the final stages of my journey... it's been a long one.

I also feel I really need the one on one with someone who not only gets it but also respects how far I have come. I need to connect with someone who will give me the push needed to be consistent with strength and conditioning training.

I am pushing to lose between 20-25 pounds over this winter.

If I make that goal, I will be well within sight of the finish line.

Congratulations! You recognized a need and took steps to fix it! Going it alone is tough, but I've found that with a personal trainer and the friends I've made at the gym, plus my SP friends, I can keep up the work!!!! I'm getting there........slower than I'd like, but still moving forward!!!

Way to Go! I feel the same as you. I've got quite a few weeks to go until my surgeon gives me the ok to jump back in, but I told him I wanted to hook up with someone and be challenged and he offered to help me find someone. I'm pretty much at my goal weight and I need to keep challenging myself so that I don't ever fall back into old habits. Good Luck and be sure to keep us posted.

Sometimes you have to pay more to fulfill a need that can not be met elsewhere. Do what you have to do.

Smart guy. You're figuring out what you need and how to get support to get there. Self-motivation is great but sometimes you just need a little help!

That's a good and realistic goal. And can I share a little secret? I'm training nowadays about 20 - 25 pounds under the weight at which I ran 18 years ago. It makes a HUGE difference in how hard/easy running is! And biking. And swimming.

So as you get lighter and stronger? You're setting yourself up for that half ironman. You are gonna rock that thing! Good choice in hiring assistance that's right for YOU.

I think even more than the fact that you're a living legend in terms of reaching for and achieving great things for your health, it is your honesty I appreciate.

Very few people admit to being lonely.

Thank you for showing us how easy it is to tell the truth, to reach out for what we need and to take the necessary steps.

I'm following your progress like the beacon that it is.
