~Losing weight in a metaphorical kind of way - a simple change we all can embrace

Hello from a rainy day here on the rock -

I'm going to be upfront with you - I have not lost the kind of weight we all want to lose - the kind that shows up on the scale and in the way our clothing fits but I am feeling lighter these days. And it all has to do with a simple change that any of you can do and it doesn't cost a dime.

Let's have a hands up here to see who employs a to-do list in their everyday routine? Thought so! emoticon Many us use the humble (or not so humble in some of my co-workers cases - they make up very elaborate computer generated to-do lists!) as a way of keeping on track.

Mine for today would have read something like this:

_walk dogs
_think about something for supper
_call groomer
_laundry
_clean bathroom

ETC

But I have decided that I am going to change my way of thinking - from now on any list I make is going to be "my done" list:


What did I do today:

I went to work, I drank my water, I ate a healthy lunch, I walked both me and the dogs, I did two loads of laundry, I am in the process of cooking a healthy supper, I did a quick run to the grocery store, I gave away all of the leftover Halloween candy, I only had one piece of bubble gum, I cleaned the upstairs bathroom, I took some me time and read a magazine, I called my mom, I wrote a couple of e-mails about a dog our group is trying to rehome, I laughed at a crow flying off which a huge bag of chips in its mouth emoticon , I washed and dried dishes (our dishwasher is broke), I made a doctor's appointment, I bought a lemon pie and delivered it to out vet clinic (as a thank you for all that they do), I apologized to John for being a moody cow when I woke up this morning, I .........................

See the difference? The first list made me feel guilty if I missed something while the second list made me feel like I actually accomplished something and did lighten the load of guilt I think we all carry on our shoulders.

Try it for yourself - I am actually going to keep a pretty little notebook nearby and call it my daily accomplishments to keep me motivated. Be sure to let me know if it makes you feel like a small load has been lifted off your shoulders and pass it along if it does. Replace that feeling of "I should have done" to "look what I accomplished"

    I love it Susan! My retired husband has a short to do list. It is "do one useful thing a day" I can tell when he is having trouble with his list because he washes dishes on those days! LOL! Prettty good for someone that never did that in his life as a working man. We don't have a dishwasher either.
I can see where your new approach will be better and better as you ad more positive activities to the list each day. Thanks for sharing your ideas... you can add "blogged on Sparks" to the list.

    Sweet! I love a "to done" list and kept a running one on computer file when in the office. So very useful.

    My lists tend to be reminders to me and I've learnt not to feel guilty about undone items. I think your idea of reflection after the day's over is sooooooo good for making you see what you HAVE done.

    Love your list! I believe positive creates positive & writing a list of already-done certainly works for me. My hubby laughs at me but I always start any new to-do list with a couple of items I can cross off immediately.

    Like the idea and I think I will use it but I'm still gonna have to make the todo along with it cause sometimes I just plain forget some of the things that need to get done at certain times.

You did accomplish a lot. I guess I will only write down the things that have a serious "gotta be done by" kind of date on the todo part. Like getting my drivers license renewed! That's the only thing on the actual todo list at this point.

    I love it and you are a genius! Really, you are. Doing something as simple as changing the name or purpose of a list is great!

I have done an amazing job chopping down brush, palmettos and trees that were in the way of my walking trail (hate getting a palmetto in the eye - did it twice today), I walked 2 miles, I threw toys for the dogs while I had a death grip on the Sawzall, I walked around the yard carrying limbs and palmettos, I drank a ton of water, I got out of bed (that was a bit tough!), I ate an apple for lunch and will cook a nice pasta meal for Di and I tonight. I did part of my weight training and just need to finish that up.

I need to get in the shower and check for ticks! Hate this time of year as they always find me! So I still have a TO DO list, but only because ticks scare the crap out of me!!!

And I have accomplished the best thing yet... I have worn my dogs out for 3 days in a row! Seems that walking the yard makes them tired too! Both are passed out on the floor in front of me right now. They even pulled a few limbs for me (yes, I have trained Max to attack limbs when I shake them. The bulldog in him LOVES this.)

    I love this idea. And may I say you not only "I actually accomplished something ", you accomplished a whole lot of something. Your list is huge and that is fantastic. I plan to use this idea, along with the keeping a journal of daily WHAT I HAVE ACCOMPLISHED. So thank you!

Oh and the picture in my mind of that crow made me smile and laugh as well. They are smart birds and I can just picture him getting to his favorite eating spot and just having a great time with those chips. Good day for the crow as well.

    Some times I still need the 'to do' list or else things might not get done. Maybe I could post the 'done' list next to the old one and see how the two stack up.
