NYC Marathon -- Will we make it?

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

Just a short update -- this is probably the longest I have been "MIA" from SP. I miss commenting on blogs, participating with teams, etc. but when life gets challenging it is best to make wise priorities and that is what I have been focusing on and work and family are high priorities, which more often than not leave little time for other things, but I am sure you will agree is good.

Since my last blog I have been to Portland, Ohio, Chicago, and now fly to NYC this weekend to run the marathon IF LaGuardia opens up soon. My son and his wife, my brother-in-law and his wife, hubby and I are scheduled to all fly out tomorrow. The week has been crazy though-- will NYC be okay in Sandy, is the marathon on or off, will our flights be canceled, should we try some crazy attempt to get there, is our host okay? All this has added to more than stressful situations at home and work.

So not to bore you with my life details :) -- pray for those who have been so devastated by the storm. My trials of whether I get to really run this marathon or not are piddily compared to what they have suffered. But as you are praying, add a request for patience for me to wait out what I can't control and be kind to all no matter what.

IF I get to run, am I ready? Not sure, I did alot of long runs but the last one was quite a while ago due to travel. But no matter my training, if I make it to the start line it simply feels dishonorable not to do my darnedest given all that NYC would have gone through to keep this event viable.

I have two more events after this weekend, a family reunion and another teaching event, and then I can rest and catch up here with everyone.

Thanks for listening!!

Good luck! Be sure to let us know all about it when you get back and get time. I've missed your blogs and updates, but I've been slacking here myself some. You are right, we have to pick our priorities and family and friends trump every time.

I've seen a news article that the marathon is on. I wonder if it is wise for NYC to still hold it so soon after Sandy though. Hard call!

Praying that everything works out for the best for you and your family relating to te marathon. Remembering that everything happens for a reason may help you to not stress so much over the outcome though.

I miss you here but understand working out priorities and protecting your precious time.

I knew you had to have been extremely busy since you were MIA. Prayers for a safe trip, if you are able to go, and a great race. If they are able to still have the race it will be a memorable experience!

Wow - this will probably be quite the experience. Tell me what you think of the dangling crane, if you get to run near it. What a dilemma that is! Have fun with the run and the adventure - I'll be thinking about you, and praying for your patience and kindness. Take care!

My prediction is that the marathon will occur but the experience may be strange. The crowds will come out to watch (because they have nothing else to do!) but so many of the restaurants, hotels, stores, and (shriek!) wifi hotspots will still be shut down that it's going to make more lines, more frustration, higher prices, inability to buy certain things, etc. Sorry but at the very least my prediction may help you prepare better.

I've run 7 marathons before (a couple without training properly)... you'll be fine even with the extended break since your last long run. Be extra conservative at the beginning and once you hit the halfway point adjust according to how you feel. Continue to adjust throughout the rest of the race. Oh, and don't forget to HAVE FUN!

Good luck making it to NY....also good luck in your marathon (although I'm sure you won't need it).
