My results are in!! Um, what do you mean I can't find out what they are?!!!

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

I just called the doctor's office and have found out that my blood work is in. Yay!

Me: Great, so, when I can I get the results?

Receptionist: You need to make an appointment with your doctor.

Me: I have one booked... the first one available isn't until November 29... I can't wait a month for my results!!

Receptionist: Oh, well I can have the nurse call you if there's a specific number you want to know.

Me: I want to know ALL my numbers!!

...conversation continues for a while longer... the receptionist has left a message with the nurse asking for the nurse to call me back today

*crosses fingers* that I get my results today!

The receptionist did comment that there wasn't anything "urgent" (in my blood work), but I'm desparately waiting to find out if I have an allergy to wheat / gluten, so this, to me, is urgent.

And, if I don't have that allergy, then why on earth am I having so many of those symptoms?!!!

Ahhh wheat. My DH and daughter are not alergic to wheat but they are sensitive to it. Their alergy tests came out negative... however they still cannot eat wheat. As soon as they eliminated it they began to see a difference in their symptoms. We eliminated all gluten first and they are able to eat some things with gluten in them such as 100% rye bread, so they are not celiac. It has helped with some of the symptoms. Not all though. So DD is now going for a lactose breath test. It will tell her up to 85% accurately if she is lactose intolerant. But only 85%. There are false negatives. The thing about sensitiviies is you can eat small amounts sometimes and not react. So when we eliminated milk products for 2 weeks then brought them back in in small amounts neither DH or DD reacted.... but after a while we began to suspect that they can't digest milk products on a regular basis. I am now experimenting with red fife flour which is flour that has not been processed and is an original grain brought to Canada in the 1800's. I am enjoying it... but DH and DD have not had any yet. I'm trying to decide on a recipe that I can guarentee their no other trigger foods like butter. Hang in there. They would tell you if you were alergic to anything.

I like Fit4Mein2012's advice. That's redonk. You should be able to get your results quicker than that!

i do get annoyed when they can't/won't tell you simple things. i had an issue where i took unpaid time off for an appointment but they canceled my appointment. they called me but never left a message. so i had to miss another day to go back again.

Sometimes a doctor can talk directly on the phone with a patient if the patient is persistent for good reason, as you could be. I would definitely have at least the nurse tell you over the phone what is going on so that you can know what to do. Persistent is the key and they'll get it eventually that you mean business!! Good luck!!

If I don't hear back today, I will go to the office tomorrow and insist on a copy. I also have copies from my 2010 and 2011 results, so have a good understanding of what my numbers were, and the doctor's comments at the time.

I've already changed my diet to avoid wheat and gluten... I simply couldn't function as I wasn't absorbing any nutrients. This also means I'm eating much more real food and almost no processed food. It *could* be that I'm reacting to something other than the wheat / gluten (for instance, something else in the processed food), but my reactions have been pretty clearly related to bread products.

Yes, you certainly cannot wait for 30 days. After all, if you are allergic to gluten you would want to know in order to change your eating habits.

Go in to the office and ask for a copy. They have to give them to you. They are concerned that you will not understand what the numbers mean, but there are plenty of programs on line to help you interpret your lab results.
